forbidding the use of bags only for some contents
« on: January 25, 2021, 01:26:42 pm »

i imagine you already figured which contents i'm talkin about... yes, seeds

i have a food stockpile with barrels with seeds and that's ok but actually the seeds are stocked in cloth bags which i would like to save for other uses, like milling products, sand and other more important stuff

apart from building an atom smasher for deleting useless seeds, is there a way to micromanage a stockpile in order to not use bags for seeds?

meanwhile i pump up the clothing industry and craft a shitton of bags

You could set your seed count shorter in the init file. Apparently less useful seeds will be lost first. In practice, I find it's not that accurate.

Alternatively, what I do is sell my bags of seeds to the elves, then buy new (empty or full) bags from humans and dwarves. And make a lot of leather bags too. Gets rid of the seeds, and makes room for new ones. So long as I keep my seed storage areas free of barrels or bins or whatever, the seed bags are easy to locate and redistribute.

oh another workaround i remembered is cooking the seeds

not much food value will come out from a triple stack of seed roast but eh, at least i use them in another way than an atomsmasher

I don't know of a way to do that.  My solution is to mass produce pigtail cloth bags.  I also made a stockpile for all the seeds I don't use by the trade depot and unload them every caravan.  It might be a DFHack exclusive feature, but the ability to search for items when selecting what to trade is super helpful.

A bag will hold over 500 seeds, and if a seed bag already exists for a seed type, that is the only bag the dwarfs will attempt to use for that seed type. So, this means that a 30-tile only-seeds no-barrels stockpile, is all you need on most embarks. But, I prefer to keep six 2-tile seed stockpiles near the subterranean farm-plots that use them and leave the other seeds in the large stockpile.

Not quite correct. If the bag with the rest of the seeds is locked by another dorf adding/removing seeds another bag is targeted instead, so the number of bags per type of seeds teds to end up being near twice the number of types (which is why my underground seed stockpile has room for two bags for each kind of underground seeds).

my seed stockpile is actually a farming/food prod related stockpile

it stocks bags (for milling products) barrels/pots (for brewing) and occasionally nest boxes, wheelbarrow and stepladders (the latter being slightly bugged iirc)

I am considering expanding my next farming floor to accomodate more precise stockpiles

if i create a stockpile for prep food and booze near the dining room dorfs should take those first instead of random raw meat and vegs from the farming area, right? (depends on their preferences i guess)

Raven's derail question: I believe dorfs first select food and then a location in which to eat it, which means the effective raw produce protection method is to surround the raw produce stockpile(s) with prepared food stockpiles, ideally in three dimensions. Proximity to food is overridden by preferences, but I think it's fine if the turnip lover gets his beloved raw turnips even if it would have been more efficient to have it served in a prepared meal.

oh so, if the raw vegetable is properly minced (always minced they mince even the flour) in a prepared food and they eat the prepared food they get the good thought for eating their favorite vegetable? good! that solves so many logistic problems

Yes, as long as the match of the ingredient is perfect (i.e. giant yak liver when the game buggily displays "yak"). Vegetables don't have than issue, but you still need a perfect match, so the raw vegetable and the flour are different things.
