I just read that old worlds often end up being dominated by necromancers.

This could maybe solved by have the necromancers war on each other - so their ressources/power would drain by having them fight each other.

Necromancer wars should kick before the world has enough towers to become overrun in the zombie apocalypse. Mechanically it can be something like: When world reaches X, then necromancers roll a dice once a year to see if they send their army to raze another necromancer site and loot their artefacts.

X can be number of towers, number of necromancers or number of undead creatures as a % of the number of intelligent creatures of the world.

For gameplay the motivation could be that necromancers want all the secrets to themselves, so they attack the other necromancers to get their books and slabs.

The battle should be made to be costly, so that a lot of creatures are destroyed in the process. The winner should loose like half.

It would probably end up with worlds getting a single uber powerfull tower, and be dominated by a necromancer anyway, but necromancer infighting ought to push the zombie apocalypse into the future, as towers would regularly get destroyed. Undead refugees should be a thing.

It's mechanical design that makes all necromancers allied currently; I'm no expert but I think it's probably due to both 1) all undead/night-creatures being neutral to eachother, and 2) possibly necromancers being the same entity, like how two dwarven civs won't go to war with eachother during world gen even though you could start such a war yourself during play.  I'm not sure about the second one.

I think it does make sense that necromancers (from different towers, anyways) would go to war with eachother though, especially now that there are actually differences among the sources of the secrets (what intelligent undead they make) it makes a lot more sense than how it works now, where death-obsessed egomaniacs send their monstrous armies to conquer the world but then are totally fine sharing it with the other guys who also want to conquer the world.

I think it's possible with how the game is now for multiple towers to go to war with eachother; the site governments of each tower could be hostile to the others.  However, that would only affect the necromancers themselves and maybe the intelligent undead; all the animated corpses on all sides would still refuse to fight eachother or the necromancers, because they're unaware of faction loyalties.

That said, how the game handles historic wars and such likely doesn't care about that, seeing as the necromancers are also able to order their mindless armies for those kinds of events, and if that's the case there might be a way to mod this into the game by editing raws to make the site governments of any necromancer group automatically hostile to everyone, including other necromancers.  You'd have to ask on the modding board, but I'm sure someone here knows.  There also might be something dumb that happens from trying though, like the necromancers becoming hostile to their own animated corpses or something.

They actually are hostile to each other, or so have I observed. There are multiple necromancer superpowers dominating different parts of my world, everyone pretty much being a civ hostile to everyone, conquering sites and accumulating armies. They do have their own site governments, belonging to the entity of the particular horde. If it still has power in the world, the original necromancer is usually still alive and well, but he has a lot of apprentice pawns in the faction, alongside large numbers of undead, experiments, but I've spotted non-thrall live civ members as well serving under them.

The civ I am playing as was pretty much wiped out by a witch once belonging to us, and then the capital was conquered by another necromancer horde. They were conquering the fortress back and forth, so they were definitely hostile to each other, as the latter was later destroyed by the former. I am not sure how they treat towers, tho. There is one single razed tower in the world, and my necro rival actually owns two towers, I don't remember which is which, they could raze one of the towers when they waged war on the other necromancers, or seize it instead. Not sure, but having more than one tower site is kinda cool addition, not gonna lie.

So yeah, post 47.01 necromancers form powerful entities and conquer the worlds, and I'm pretty sure they fight each other as well. The sites they seize will appear as purple, and will revert to normal once they wipe them out (tested with missions in fort mode).
