A Dwarfen Mystery
« on: October 13, 2020, 06:23:06 pm »

Our Captain of the Guard threw a Tantrum in Our Dining Hall, attacking Three Dwarfs and injuring Two, and was herself injured.

She went missing shortly afterward, seemingly from Our Hospital.  However, checking the Thoughts of some Dwarfs in and around the Hospital indicate she died, as they had Thoughts of witnessing her Death.

Searching the Hospital failed to locate her Corpse, and the only way she could have left the Fortress is if she jumped into the Hospital Well.  Searching the Outflow Pipe also failed to find Anything.

If it's relevant, We are still playing 0.44.xx

Any Ideas as to what happened?

Check the stocks screen for the corpse?

Check the stocks screen for the corpse?

Having taken your Advice, We have discovered that the Body is not in the Stocks Screen.

However, We did find Equipment matching that of the Squad Position on one of the Hospital Beds.  No Corpse, but whatever happened occured within the Hospital.

Legends will have recorded how she died. Just look her up there.

Could she have caught fire somehow?

Engraving a slab should do the same.

Could she have caught fire somehow?

The Areas involved lack identifiable Ignition Sources, so probably not.  Also, Our Waterfall system ensures that any Dwarf walking the Route she needed to take gains a Water Coating.

Legends will have recorded how she died. Just look her up there.

We don't know how to do this.

Engraving a slab should do the same.

As she is listed as missing, not dead, this method will not work as the Slab will merely say when she went missing.

I've noticed that sometimes when somebody dies in the hospital, a dwarf will take to wherever it belongs without actually reporting the person as dead. So I'd say check the corpse stockpile or maybe even any coffins that might have been empty when she died.

Also, I am moderately certain that engraving a slab will tell you the actual cause of dead even if the body is missing. It's worth a try at least.

What's your justice setup like? If you convicted her on the assault charges and she had a deputy, then they would have moved to dish out punishment. And given that assault convictions often result in beatings (always, if you have no free cages or chains), her being unconscious in the hospital could have ended... poorly.

If you don't use any utilities such as DFHack, you can check legends by creating a copy of the world folder so you have two identical fortresses. Then abandon/retire one of them so you are free to look at the legends of that world.

Check your burial area too- if there were any coffins open and unassigned, she could have been buried before they noticed she was missing. Dwarves are funny like that. Should that be the case, have that receptacle deconstructed and all open ones set to not receive new dead until they take her to the corpse pile and then properly notice her.

CotG is immune to justice.

No Charges were filed.

Thank you for the Advice about viewing the Legends.

We do not use Coffins in this Fortress, for historical Reasons.

We have checked the Stockpiles, and Our Corpse Disposal System.  Still nothing.

While the Slab itself was lost to a Crash (Season change between Death/Disappearance and Engraving meant that the Death was saved and the Slab wasn't), We did engrave a Slab.  It merely said that she went missing and when she went missing.

NOTICE:

We have checked the Legends, and she died of Suffocation caused by her Injuries.  Still no sign of the Corpse, and as We have re-opened the Funeral System of dropping all Dwarfen Corpses into a Magma Pipe it may never be found, but it is good to know what happened to her.
