Grand Tactician The Civil War (1861-1865)
« on: August 25, 2020, 10:20:30 am »

Newly released Early access game as of August 2020.

It is a Grand Strategy game with Tactical battles, Pretty impressive feature set. It has a lot of meat to it. Play as union or confederacy.

Able to build your armies out the way you would like (if your economy can afford it). (build your own or Import artillery from europe, or during battles you can capture enemy artillery and use them against them)

Build ships to create fleets the confederacy never got around to.

Spend money to upgrade logistical networks across the nation. Build telegraph stations, supply depots, forts.

The game is early access currently just got there this week and currently very buggy so do beware, however under everything you can see in a month or two its gonna be something more refined. Lots of options.

Quote
Grand Tactician: The Civil War (1861-1865) is a real-time strategy game combining a strategic campaign with tactical battle game-play. Run your nation, muster, manage and support great armies, and maneuver them to defeat the enemy. Once the opposing armies meet, command your troops to victory in battles fought on historical battlefields.

PTW, this seems mighty fascinatin'

Steam feature list is a bit vague, but from the screenshots it appears there will indeed come with a more fleshed out campaign/grand-strat aspect than previous ACW centred games (in recent memory) "a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!"

Also the aesthetic is really well done screenshots lookin' like fine parchment!

Top review says its pretty incredibly deep, even for a wargame, but that some of the varnish has yet to dry--so to speak. $39.99 on Steam. For the curious: https://store.steampowered.com/app/654890/Grand_Tactician_The_Civil_War_18611865/

There's quite a few of them, Slitherine publishes most of the large-scope older ones, but there's also several warband-like/mods centred on tactical combat, as well as the Ultimate General series.

I'm actually aware of the old Sid Meyer civil war games (which even GoG doesn't have :/).  It's more that I'm assuming only Americans or real history/military buffs actually know/care about the US civil war, and so a game set there would only really sell in the US.

Just to top off the topic, Grand Tactician has received multiple fairly large updates now.

Performance increases, and many many many gameplay tweaks and fixes.

They added a 1864 campaign as well now. The game is far more playable now. Getting there.
