It has eight legs and is segmented, my guess is he guessed it would have a carapace

Well! I'll just jump in without the slightest idea what's going on, shall I? If the canteen is empty or partially empty, I give a +1 to filling the canteen.
If the canteen is full, how about we watch the creature for a few minutes while staying in the tree?
