Your ear guides you to a small brook, and after testing the water you fill up your canteen. You think you can hear something approaching the stream from deeper into the forest.

Climb a tree, we should have a good advantage with our rifle up there.

+1-- if and only if there's a tree nearby we can scramble up within ten seconds or so. Otherwise, just duck behind a tree and keep our rifle in hand.

You climb up one tree and find a good branch to perch on.

Below you, an animal comes up to the stream - but it's no animal you've ever seen before. It is eight-legged and segmented, with relatively short, stubby legs. It walks with a slow, steady gait eerily reminiscent of a bear. It dips its head into the water and starts drinking greedily.

Ecch, scary.
...
Let's eat it!

Rifle time. Slip a bullet (plasma charge? Laser bolt?) under the base of the beastie's skull!

Alas, saner minds prevailed.

-1 DO NOT SHOOT

Pretty sure it's not even going to feel it.

Watch the creature for a bit and see what it does.

Feh... caution before glory, I suppose.

Watch the creature for a bit and see what it does.

+1 also, we could maybe quietly follow it to learn more about it, whether it’s a herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, etc. Quietly following it will prevent it from:
If Carnivore/Omnivore: Considering us as prey and attacking us
If Herbivore: Scaring it away or it perceiving us as a potential threat and attempting to kill us

We don’t want to die, and we don’t know much about the world we’re in. Observing the wildlife without being detected will give us a better insight into how the ecosystem operates

Without knowing what's out there, we may want to avoid being too quiet, because startling a wild animal is a good way to provoke it.

Right, my thought was that making the noise might startle it.
Disclaimer: I’ve never attempted to follow wild animals

As you sit in the tree, wondering if tailing the strange beast is a good idea, it switches from drinking to eating parts of some bushes around the river.

PTW.

Enemy post, why were you sure it would not even feel our weapon's blast/projectile?
