You said China would call it something different. Well, in case you actually know its Chinese name, 8) is the name translated from its European names?

Please remember that it's a historical time period. Thats where the confusion about europeon vs global came from. The name is europe-centric but the entire world existed during the time period. Hence the mixed messages.

Is the period named after a religous event?

Only in a very small way. Not in the way you're probably thinking at all. (eg, not 'the Protestant Reformation'.)
