Why are stray dogs in my dead / missing list?
« on: June 12, 2020, 08:40:53 am »

While I have butchered quite a few dogs before, just now I ordered some more dogs butchered.
And for some reason they show up in my dead / missing list.  None of the other hundreds of animals I butchered show up there.
Just to be clear, they were stray dogs. No owner.

EDIT: heh, and now they are gone from the list.. I guess DF just adds butchered animals to the dead/missing list for a few seconds and then culls them from it?

DF does not cull the dead/missing list, resulting in things getting wonky after a couple of thousand deaths (I think it's when the contents of all lists combined reaches 3000). DFHack has a utility that removes "unimportant" dead critters from the list periodically to avoid hitting the limit for no births etc., essentially leaving only sapient residents.

Ah, I do have DFHack running, so I guess that is what removed the strays then.

It's not set to run automatically by default, though, unless some newb pack changes that.

Using the LNP too.

And it's enabled by the LNP.

Do you "autodump destroy" on all remains and corpses? Ill do this, if a cat gets into caverns.

The LNP will remove butchered unnamed animals from the list after a while, as well as invaders. However, named animals (pets and named hunting/war animals) do remain. Is there a way to remove those?

On the flip side, I would like Forgotten Beasts to remain visible, those interest me far more than some random pet rabbit. Any way to do that?

No I do not use autodump destroy at all.

I shove my corpses and body parts in a pit using a minecart and then atomsmash them.
Remains just go into the general refuse pile, because they will just rot away and do not cause trauma and stress.

@Quarque: I too would prefer to see dead FBs in the list, and, in general, have the list use the duration since the death to determine whether to remove items from the list, as it's definitely annoying to have some entries disappear shortly after they were entered (and that goes for the vanilla Announcement window too). Removing pets by checking if the critter was sapient would probably be possible, but it would require a parameter to determine whether you want to keep them or not, as some people like their pets.

It can be done, but it would require someone to do it, submit a pull request, and have that request accepted.

A new noble position.

Keeps track of the dead/missing. Upgrades to "Eater of Souls(LE), Cryptkeeper(N)or Handler of the Slabs(LG), depending on alignment. Places wreathes, flowers and gravecovers on important dead, removes others.
