Nobles quarters - how do you design them?

My forts usually don't survive long enough to get many nobles due to a mix of lacking defences and lacking motivation. But now, I really want to get a fort to the "late-game" and was wondering how you guys prepare for nobility. I was thinking about 9x9 for a baron, 11x11 for a count, 13x13 for a duke and 3 separate rooms 9x9 for my monarch.

Now there are still some questions left:
- are those sizes fine or would you suggest others?
- is it wise to only have one room for baron/count/duke or should I separate quarter, living room and office respectively?
- does the monarch entourage need extra rooms?
- my hard pop cap is @150 right now. a monarch is possible with 140. I read that if he arrives, the amount of entourage can be influenced by the hard cap. should I increase it to receive more fighters? can I even use them as the rest of my military or do they only protect the monarch?

Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't played with vanilla nobles since before v 0.47, but isn't the baron/count/duke the same dwarf? If that is still the case then, unless you to play it that way, I don't see any reason to give rooms of different sizes in each rank.

As far as room size is concerned, I would worry too much about it. Give them as large a room as you feel is enough (depending on how you want your fort to look) and then just pack it with high value furnitures and engraving to meet their value requirements.

So the conclusion I'm getting here is that we use QSPs because dwarves can't pilot submarines.

The holdings dorf is the same one, elevated in rank, as Ulfarr saud. It's possible to be saddled with a horde of nobles holding other sites, though, and those freeloaders demand that you should provide them with rooms, rather than them going "home" and require rooms there.

I make my noble rooms 11*11, smooth and engrave them, and spread the required furniture between the rooms, which is typically sufficient once I manage to get enough masterworks furniture. It can be tricky for the monarch if the bugger appoints itself early, though, as the engravings might not be good enough when there's been no time to train on e.g. the inn. I make one separate room for each function. The mayor gets 5*5 rooms, and only the rooms required by the office.

As Ulfarr said, instead of engraved size, you can cram high value junk into the rooms (obviously they have to be large enough for that).

My early ones tend to be fairly small as well, even 3 3x3 locations at the beginning for barons.  I usually use the spike weapon trap method of upgrading the value until I take the time to design a fun design with fountains and such.  I generally start with glass spikes but could easily use metal spikes to increase the value even further.   I just start low because I don't want to overstate my wealth until I get a highly trained steel armor wearing army.

I've had a lot of luck with 5x5 rooms for nobles.
One point you need to consider is what type of stone you're digging out, and how the various rooms are separated.
If you have a noble that needs an office, dining room, bedroom, mausoleum, it's easier to make them grand by digging them out of magnetite than clay loam.
If you have the Z space available, consider having all the rooms stacked on top of each other. This lets you use hatch covers, which add value to a room.
Make all the walls two blocks thick, so the engravings count for the entire room. If you have two rooms next to each other with one block wide walls, any engraving will be claimed by one and not the other. Plus I think there's a penalty when the room overlaps with another, so if two rooms try to claim the same wall, they both suffer.

After that It's just a matter of cramming in good furniture until the noble is happy.

Thanks for all the answers regarding design. I will go with 3 separate, smaller (e.g. 5x5) rooms and use the trick with the engravings as well.
So if I understand correctly, the dining room requirements must be met by a room owned by that noble, right? Does having them eat with the others in a royal dining room create bad moods?
Also any hints for these points?

In my games 5x5 rooms without walls are enough for nobles. The rest gets 3x3 rooms. I stick master quality required furniture there from clear glass or silver/iron or gold/steel. I do not need to encrust any furniture or anything. The new thing I am experimenting now with is to cover the office area with legendary dinning room location, so any Dwarf eating there will not go miss a positive mood buff.

In a starting fort, I meet demands with room size.
However, if I have time to encrust metal furniture, nobles get same size room as the rest. I just use expensive furniture.
I also encrust doors and set to internal (and resize room) so they count for roomvalue.
In a pinch I will use weapon traps to get room value.

Major office needs to be easy accessible for complaining dwarves.
