Imposters should hide their high skills
« on: May 09, 2020, 04:01:14 pm »

I hade some imposters in my fortress, who turned out to be vampires. However, I noticed them immediately as being imposters, because their very high social skills (in particular Intimidation and Lying), and high scheming-skill.
So, imposters should be able to pretend having low skills. Also they might want to hide their kill-list and strange relatives like master and former master. Having a list of 10 deities in relations raised suspicion

Yes, better vampire hiding is needed.  Vampires should probably adopt an entirely fake profile and identity when their visit your fortress and fake profiles should incorporate fake skills.  I am a fake carpenter, here are my fake carpenter skills (but you won't be seeing my real skills).

And then watch the bug tracker fill up with "highly skilled carpenter is slow and only produces crap" reports...

That is the idea.  :)

Putting the fact on some Q&As should account for that, any sensible person should check those before reporting a bug. How over-used is the bug tracker, anyway? I personally find it a bit tedious, but maybe that's just me.

+1 to the top post. The skills they choose should be dependent on their personality, so that only dim-witted and/or over-confident vampires pose as masters of an art they have no knowledge of.

The idea would be that they hide high Social skills but overselling could be a possibility for the less intelligent ones.

I am sure there is a better way of managing this other than "here is the check-list of things which in the present version of the game gives vampires away, get Toady One to fix each one manually"

The problem is that concealing information that is normally visible is itself suspicious.  The fake skills have to corroborate an entirely fake backstory that is also credible to those being deceived.  Fake skills fit in with a fake legends entry, the being would reference non-existant but credible people and events to create it's background.  We have to be careful here to distinguish between personal events and global level events, faking the latter should be avoided because it is hard to spot they are fake.
