Let's use some of my housing materials to make display stands. I'm thinking things along the lines of mica stones with carved-out slots for ores to be placed inside, as if they were naturally growing from it, and small artificial trees made of some of my logs, set up so that plants can grow - in pockets along the "trunk", nestled across the "branches", in hanging "fruits", and a variety of other locations that cater to how they would best grow. Additionally, mortal tools that would be used for the gathering and processing of these items will be placed around the items - for example, an axe may be lodged in the ground near one of the trees with a basket (another planting sport) hanging from its handle, while a pickaxe and hammer would be lain on the stones.

After the mechanical god had refused his company, and then being trapped by the ridiculous mechanical stairs, Koaring had been ready to call the deal off. It was good fortune perhaps that he was not accosted with questions directly upon his return. He had time to reflect upon his frustrations, and to decide which of his numerous plans and hopes he must sacrifice upon the altar of priority. Foremost in his mind came the dark conclusion that without the nameless one's joint project, he had nothing to uphold his tentative deal with Dun either. That, and a bit of gnawing of his own honor, convinced him to keep to the agreed upon schedule.

Koaring? Koaring! Do you like it?
"I do."
Koaring likes it very much. The strangely wild place that unfolds in his vision-to-be is both more organized than he feared and more homelike than Koaring would have believed. It is not quite the same style as his own bedroom, but near enough. It is good, and it puts him in the best mood he has felt for some time.

Only one touch is missing: the delivery of the building materials has reminded Koaring that when he first arrived he worried about security. Not only from his immediate classmates, but the Academy at large. He has materials and tools to secure the room against intrusion, if such can be worked into the plan.

Having earlier insisted that he would donate materials to the project, Koaring will contribute 3 Bars of Frost Copper to the new building (regardless). He also offers the use of the Tome of Runes and Locksmith's Tools to seal the room against thefts, although there is little point wearing them out if {null} thinks it's too much to enclose their sylvan display in a Vault.

Ah. Yeah. I suppose that's a good idea.
The construct looks somewhat disappointed at the idea that others would want to steal from the display, but acknowledging of its truth.

"Ah, cheer up! It's not as though I have knowledge of actual plans afoot. Although there are a couple of moose gods I wonder might be passing information. It's more that the student handbook heavily implies that classes will form rivalries eventually. I say we may as well plan for it now as later, if we can."

The goddess is lead outside her sick ward and up to a balcony so that she may gaze upon her new followers. Below her stand about six hundred humanoid Cephalopods of several different species, each with a weapon and a saddled Camel Ray. The majority of the soldiers are octopus or squid people, on average about three quarters the size of the standard human. They each wear leather armor carry what appears to be some sort of large, bladed, crescent shaped, and slightly enchanted throwing weapon.

About one sixth of the soldiers, however, are heavy cavalry; Nautilus people who in addition to their thick shells wear metal armor that gleams in the dim light of the abyssal city. The shortest of these knights stands about eight feet tall, and the species of Camel Ray that they ride is closer in size to an elephant than a cow. In addition to their size, these ray's are armored in the same metal as their masters, and each possess several stinging barbs on their tails. In addition to a larger version of the bladed crescent carried by Dun's light infantry, these knights also carry large metal lances.

Dun notes Húndàn must have dug around in her mind while she was out to come up with her host's banner. They fly a flag that depicts two glowing hot freshly smithed axes on a black background, the emblem of Dun's father. Rising above from behind the axes, however, where she would expect to the head of a dragon, Dun instead notes a the furry webbed hand of an otter person clutching a pink pearl. The Abyssal Wizard who escorted the goddess to the balcony explains that the symbol comes from the family crest of the dynasty who ruled the Otterfolk at the height of their empire, when they used to trade with Húndàn's people.
Dun swims excitedly down to meet her new possessions. Clearly this was an excellent trade, albeit one she may wish to avoid making again in the near future.

"I am Dun, your new owner," she states bluntly. "Your default purpose will be to serve the Otterfolk near Pai, who are likewise my possessions, and in particular to escort their trade caravans so that they might engage in commerce with this city. They are currently impoverished and unable to venture to such depths, but I intend to address these shortcomings in the near future.

Tell me about yourselves,"
she adds as a command.

"Bruh..." Dào Lànzuì, one of the two Bull Moose seniors in the class chimes in, "if any of you freshmen want to practice joint miracles, you should come to the mead hall I'm setting up. It is in the academy's Yellow Wing. I'm throwing a massive raging bender to dedicate the place, and if you show up early and help me make the refreshments and decorations during the Saga of the Rat, you can party with the seniors!"
Dun stares at the senior in morbid fascination for several long seconds. This creature is supposed to be her superior, yet it reminds her of nothing so much as the irreverent dwarves her father liked to coerce into service when his properly broken slaves couldn't get something done. She's starting to suspect that the gods of this place tend very much towards resembling mortals.

"...would this function involve powerful, inebriated entities making poor social and reproductive decisions?" she finally asks, still wary but starting to suspect these seniors aren't dangerous so much as very large.

9 units of moss, 3 units of palm nuts, and 3 units of godswine will be taken.
In the display, the moss will be draped over one of the trees, as if it were its foliage, and palm nuts will be nestled in the branches as its "fruit", with a few lying at the bottom, one split open to display its milk.
Meanwhile, some of the frost copper will be used to facilitate the creation and stability of godswine crystals, which will be spread across the mica wall. One particularly large crystal will be left to be slightly melting, such that one may sample droplets of the beverage.

The leader of your new cavalry unit steps forward and bows low. They are one of the large nautilus people, distinguishable from its peers only by a slight purple tinge to its armor. "Your command will be followed great one. We shall leave for Pai as soon as this meeting concludes." it declares, "As for information about us, most of your soldiers come from the various tribes and clans of nomadic rayherds that wander the abyssal depths, great one. As long as they are loyal to you, their families will receive regular gifts of weapons and meat from Húndàn's court. Should one of them fall in battle, a tribe may choose to send a replacement to continue receiving the gifts."

"Myself and most of the other officers under me are slightly different." The Knight explains, "we too descend from rayherds, but were acquired by the Enigma Sharks as children and raised at Húndàn's great military academy. We have spent our whole lives, great one, studying and mastering the arts of war and death in anticipation of one day serving a deity such as yourself."

"Well duh. Does your pantheon of origin not throw parties?" Dào Lànzuì asks earnestly "A god mighty enough to graduate from this academy is mighty enough to cast reason aside and enjoy himself from time to time!"

What can you tell me about Húndàn's court? Specifically, if there are any favored bloodlines or positions an outsider might interbreed with to gain favor and status."

"My pantheon of origin throws... celebratory feasts. There are grim displays of wealth and power, political overtures and challenges, wagers for resources and status, and various indulgences, usually at the obvious expense of slaves.

I believe what you are describing is closer to what I have witnessed among fringe mortals. They consume implausible amounts of alcohol, brazenly disrespect their betters, and engage in behaviors of considerable risk or waste with no discernible benefit.

If this sounds about right, I would like to attend your party. What must be done?"

"Húndàn values competence over blood, great one." The Knight replies, "His court consists of skilled bureaucrats, merchants, wizards, and generals, and rarely does a child inherit a parent's position. The only bloodline with true value is Húndàn's and he already has plenty of potential heirs, locked away in secret labs where they are educated and perfected."

The armored soldier pauses for thought. "If you wish to breed for status, great one, might I suggest asking around The University of Magical Arts and Sciences here in the city. Some bloodlines of Húndàn's people are more magically potent than others, and although the heirs of those particular families rarely wield much in the way of official political power, they may claim great standing in the academic realm as a birthright."

"Interesting, if unfortunate for my plans. It makes sense that such a mighty wizard would have plans for all of his blood worth keeping, however.

Do you know anything about how the University or its prominent families are structured? Or how sorcery works in general among Húndàn's people?

Possibly related, are you aware of the economic and legal structure of Húndàn's realm? Are there frameworks in place to prevent or enforce monopolies of knowledge or living things, for instance?"

"I'm no expert on magic, great one," The Nautilus Knight admits, "but the sharks speak of blood layers. I know every member of their species possesses what they call a 'common blood layer' which allows them to generate light in the abyss and alter their own metabolism and movement speed. The dedicated wizards possess additional blood layers, each granting a different magic; I know some individuals who claim as many as twelve, and Húndàn is said to possess twenty eight. I could not tell you the difference between a blood layer and a bloodline. They are both passed from parent to child, but there seem to be a bunch of arcane rules to understand who might inherit a blood layer from their mother or father."

Your soldier glances off toward a brightly lit golden tower in the distance, which you surmise must be the university. "The great families of the university, I think there are perhaps six of them, great one, or perhaps a dozen. They each carry one or two rare blood layers, and have mastered the secrets of passing them on and the magical techniques for getting the most out of them. The university is split into departments, each studying a single useful Blood Layer. Obviously a family with mastery of a rare blood layer controls at least that layer's department, and members who carry useful but more common blood layers often have great influence in those departments as well."

"As for monopoly, Húndàn speaks of free trade, but there is only so much to go around, and it all goes through him. Most of this city's economy is fueled by trades with gods such as yourself, and he handles those deals personally." The knight offers, "there are some masons and furnace wizards who can make goods from materials mined here in the abyss, but much of what is distributed to the population or exported is made by Húndàn and his inner circle from the surface resources and divine energy he acquires in trade. I suppose Húndàn would prefer not to hold such a monopoly, but on the other hand, he does not stop the great families of the university from monopolizing knowledge of their blood layers, so it is hard to gauge how he really feels, great one."

Saga of the Rabbit

Koaring stands in the middle of the completed Acquisition Lab Storage and addresses {Null}:
"Well, friend, I am truly impressed. I know I was not the most cooperative partner, and I wish I could have been more successful at finding materials to contribute. I believe you have more than earned my cooperation for the class grade and perhaps beyond. The question remains, are you still willing to partner with me after all my setbacks?"

-----

The next chance that Koaring sees Dun he will tell her about the Lab Storage and explain that she is welcome to use it for storing anything she might want to keep in a more secure place. Ask any time Koaring is around the quarters for access. He hopes she will find it sufficient to grant him permission to work in the Menagerie; with the ALS complete he might not have as much need for Dun's room, but the latter still seems better suited to grow and experiment on living things if he ever moves in that direction.

Saga of the Horse

Koaring's ears immediately perk forward when he hears of a method to make mortals kinder: he may have found one answer to the difficulty he faces in 'rescuing' his daughter from the life of an evil hag. The extreme growing conditions may need to be overcome, but he can hardly wait to begin experiments.

The Godswine also intrigues him, but for an entirely different project. He has a magical harp that could use more strongly enchanted strings. So he asks Chet: "The Godswine melts in ordinary temperatures, but can it be stabilized? I am thinking of alloying it with Frost Copper, for instance."

Koaring stores 3 Wonder Palm Nuts, 3 chunks of Godswine, and 9 tufts of Electric Blue Moss, all in the ALS for the moment. He also moves his entire store of Frost Copper bars to the Lab Storage.

Meanwhile, some of the frost copper will be used to facilitate the creation and stability of godswine crystals, which will be spread across the mica wall. One particularly large crystal will be left to be slightly melting, such that one may sample droplets of the beverage.

When he sees the plan of his unnamed partner, of course Koaring does not begrudge the use of some Frost Copper to make a display. He layers some Blue Moss in clumps along the base and trailing from the summit of the mica wall, hoping to visually tie the two halves of the room together. Where {Null} has set up a melting display of Godswine, Koaring adds a curve to the wall beneath that will lead the tiny rivulet into a hidden refrigerated pocket where the liquid mineral can be collected when no one is nearby to consume the offering.

"Yes... I think I understand. Infiltrating or taking control of one of the University's families and departments could give me one of the only useful power bases in the city. Alternatively, I could attempt to create a new source of wealth or power.

To that end, I have three questions. Bear in mind that I am a god, so your answers needn't be reasonable.

One: What do the wizards want or need? What would they pay dearly for, what would make them strong or useful, what do they not even know they lack?

Two: What do the common inhabitants of this city want or need? What would give them pleasure or purpose, and so in turn please Húndàn?

Three: What do the rayherd tribes of the surrounding areas and beyond want or need? What would rally them to my banner or lure them to my table?"

Koaring stores 3 Wonder Palm Nuts, 3 chunks of Godswine, and 9 tufts of Electric Blue Moss, all in the ALS for the moment. He also moves his entire store of Frost Copper bars to the Lab Storage.

Chet considers the question. "You should be able to stabilize it with a creative application of divine energy. Not sure alloying a mineral that is to be consumed with a mineral generally not eaten by organic lifeforms is the wisest way of going about it, but I suppose that it could work..."

The instructor scratches his blow hole. "What I'd do is plate it with a thin layer of frost copper, which I'd peel away when it was time to consume it. What are you thinking about doing with solid Godswine anyway?"

Dun considers her knight's report for a few minutes before continuing.

"Yes... I think I understand. Infiltrating or taking control of one of the University's families and departments could give me one of the only useful power bases in the city. Alternatively, I could attempt to create a new source of wealth or power.

Three: What do the rayherd tribes of the surrounding areas and beyond want or need? What would rally them to my banner or lure them to my table?"

The Knight does their best to answer your questions in the order they are posed. "I'd say Wizards fall into four groups, great one, when it comes to what they want. Those tied to the military are most concerned with Húndàn rising in power, so that they might one day contest the Dire Orca for control of shallower water. The Wizards in Húndàn's personal court and inner circle crave rare materials and divine essence to experiment with, like their master does. The wizards of the great families of the University are most concerned with protecting and expanding their power base. The wizards without direct ties to the institutions of power, of course, seek power, and often wealth; They typically work as healers, smiths, masons, and glassblowers, and trade on their professional reputation above all else. I'd say most wizards, regardless of status or profession, are also interested in knowledge for knowledge's sake."

The mortal can only shrug at your second question. "I'm afraid I cannot offer much insight on the common people. I've been raised at the military academy since I came to this place, and have had very little business with the average inhabitant of the city. Almost everybody I have dealt with so far is either my better or my peer. Húndàn does well at providing for his people. I'm sure many are happy living quiet and comfortable lives. But I'm also sure there are always those with ambitions, or at least dreams of great wealth."

The soldier finally moves onto the third question. "Most of the reyherd tribes are led by traditionalist chieftains who cling to the old ways. The scour the abyssal floor, looking for food for their beasts, who in turn provide them with blood and eggs. Few want anything to do with the outside world, but even those ones are willing to send excess population away to Húndàn in exchange for gifts of weapons and food. Best in their eyes to send the troublemakers and change bringers somewhere they can do no harm, but I'm sure many would remove Húndàn and his cities if they had the means to do so, so as to open up more seafloor for themselves. I'm sure in the ranks of this very unit are plenty of banished tribesquid who were sent away for dreaming too big."

It pauses before continuing, and gives his own steed a pat on the hump. "Of course, sometimes a leader rises who wants to move his tribe into the future. A good handful now raise breeds of ray that are far better at providing death to a battlefield than they are at providing food to a table. They both sell those rays directly to Húndàn, and use them to raid their neighbors for slaves, who are also sold to the Enigma Sharks as soldiers. They grow rich off this trade, and eventually can afford arms and armor for their entire population, at which point they often become too ambitious for their own good, contest for control of shallow well-lit waters, and get smacked by the Dire Orca. I have heard tales of many tribal leaders, including my own grandfather, who fell in battle against the dolphin-fiends only to be replaced by an ambitionless traditionalist. But there are plenty of tribes out there who would have plenty of use for a god."
