Adventure in retired fort -- can't find my artifacts
« on: February 03, 2020, 02:41:37 am »

I'm using version 44.12.

I made a full set of artifact weapons and armor in fortress mode. So I retired my fort and started a new adventurer in that fort, but when I go to pick up the artifacts they seem to have disappeared. I'm pretty sure they've been scattered about within the fortress area (I saw my mayor's artifact bed up on the surface where it shouldn't have been; also legends say they're still at the fort), but I really don't want to search every tile to collect them all.

I've tried a few things to get them to stay in one spot. I defined an artifact stockpile and had them all gathered there. I tried putting them behind a forbidden door, I tried forbidding each artifact individually, I tried forbidding just the bins they're contained in. Each time they've gotten moved from their place by the time my adventurer gets there.

I'm pretty sure I've done this successfully on an earlier version. What's the best way to keep my gear from getting moved?

Have some dwarves carry/wield them and then kill them with your adventurer.
Problem is, though: Finding the corresponding dwarves. But this should be way less problematic. Especially if you didn't poke the caverns yet.

I forget if it's true or not, or where I heard it first, but on retirement isn't it the case that the heaviest stuff won't move as far?
So putting your artifacts in the heaviest bin you can make should keep them at least nearby where you made them.

And retire of course, don't abandon. Abandoning will strew your stuff all over the place.

Seal them in a vault using a drawbridge. Stuff in sealed areas doesn't move.

Also, use pedestals and display cases. DF takes items on pedestals pretty seriously.

Put tthe artifacts on pedestals next time. Otherwise they are randomly scattered about (including in the caverns if you have them uncovered) which can make it insanely difficult to recover. One time i spent a whole real life day trying to recover an artifact from a fort. I did get it eventually but it was harrowing.

Any good way to stop artifact furniture moving around?

Thanks for the help! I tried pedestals and it worked. One thing though: doesn't taking artifacts from pedestals count as theft in the eyes of the fortress?

I'll try the drawbridge next.
