Bio: Growing up, Anumita knew little of what a typical child within the domain of Shari’Val experienced. There were no sweet songs and lullabies sung by a mother who loved her unconditionally, no daily worship at the feet of one of the many Vadas shrines, nor even the joy brought by the many festivities held by the faithful. No. The only lullabies Anumita ever knew were the many incantations and calculations she recited to herself as she drifted off to sleep. There was no daily worship because there were daily lessons to be learned and skills to be mastered. And her joy was brought by aiding her father in moving ever closer to his ultimate goal.
As an infant, Anumita was found by the hermit scholar Veda Sri as she floated down the river, abandoned to the quite literal tides of fate by a family who either did not want her, or could not provide for her. The devout among the Shari’Valian might’ve said that it was the Vadas themselves which compelled Veda Sri to pluck this poor babe from the waters and raise her as his own. Veda Sri himself might’ve even said as much, in a different life long ago. The harsh truth of it however, was that there was no divine compulsion behind his actions that day. Veda Sri had instead sensed the immense life force the baby girl possessed, and for that reason alone intervened in what otherwise would’ve been certain death. Or, in her master’s own words, as Anumita would hear them years later “It would’ve been a crime to let that much life energy be thrown away, wasted by ignorant parents.”
Veda Sri was a man of walking contradictions, from Anumita’s experience. He lived in a ruined, forgotten temple deep in the heart of the Waterlands, yet denounced the cult of the Vadas with a fiery passion. He had known love once, but claimed that time was gone, and he could never know it again. He was once even a priest of the Vadas, but even then had his blasphemous doubts and insatiable curiosity of true the workings of the world, both the physical and intangible. He sought knowledge of the darkest and most forbidden of sorts, of how to pierce the veil of death and restore those beyond it to true life, yet never once allowed an innocent person to be harmed or killed in the course of his research. He claimed she was simply his apprentice, that saving her had nothing to do with sentimentality, yet he guided her and nurtured her with all the love and care of a stern father.
He was the most brilliant man she ever knew, and the only family she’d ever had. Everything she knew of the dark arts, of the art and science which so many of the more superstitiously inclined needlessly shrouded with mysticism and fear, she learned from him. And someday, she hoped to be at his side when he finally unlocked the secret to overcoming the cruel laws of nature and granting life back to those who had it stolen from them.
But that day would never come. In Veda Sri’s research, he had devised many ways to heal the desperately ill and dying, to give hope to those who had been denied it by more conventional, non-sacrilegious avenues. “Essence-Transferring” he called it. Obeying the only law that mattered to him, that of equivalent exchange, he would sacrifice the life of one organism, sometimes more than one, in order to save that of another. To those he had saved through this message, he was a saint, even if in truth he was an apostate. Inevitably, the wrong words would leave the wrong lips. And those words would be heard by the wrong people.
Anumita recalls little of that night. Only that her master woke her with a start, thrusts his most important research into a rucksack for her to carry, and told her to flee, to run far and run fast, and to not stop until she had left the Waterlands. And to never let their dream die. As she fled through the back of the old temple, she could see them. Dozens of the faith militia, led by a few priests of the Vadas. Bows, spears, fire, and darkness in hand. Their home set ablaze. Veda Sri charging out to meet the persecutors, arms outstretched the spirits of all those who knew his cause to be kind and just in one final call for aid. A torrent of darkness answered, swallowing the senses of all who were present, and in the process causing Anumita to fall into the same river from whence she’d been rescued.
And then… nothing.
When Anumita awoke, she was cold, wet, and alone. Well… not alone, given the settlement just off in the distance, nestled along the shore. Whatever her master had done, whatever he had summoned with his beseeching… she had a feeling this had been his true intent. No natural river currents would have carried her this far, or this safely, to a place so conducive to her flight from this madness. Came daybreak, she bartered what few valuables she carried and found passage with the first fisherman willing to not ask any questions.
Anumita has traveled far and wide since that dark night, striving to expand upon her master’s research and ignite the dream he had kindled in her heart since childhood. True to her master’s teachings however, the use of Innocents as research subjects was unthinkable. Thus, Anumita wasted no opportunities to enlist the aid of highwayman, bandits, and brigands in her pursuit of forbidden knowledge. Such a small, unassuming girl… travelling alone… surely, she would be easy pickings. That is precisely the mentality that facilitated Anumita continuing her research, Striking down the cruel and the wicked with an unwavering smile on her face before putting their bodies to better use. Still, she has much to learn before she has any hope of ever achieving her master’s dream.
And what better way to potentially gain the knowledge she needs than through exploring the greater unknown? Thus, when the call for mercenaries to accompany the royal expedition was made, she eagerly volunteered her services, stressing how useful it might be to have someone skilled in the dark arts while facing the countless dangers that strange and alien lands are bound to hold. And even if they didn’t want her along as a scholar, another soul capable of holding its own in battle was also a benefit, no?
