Nope, just not quite wasting excess money, 2 crossbowmen per turn.

Is that the pro strat? Spending as much gold as possible every turn? I would have thought that saving up would be warranted at times.

Saving is warranted at times. The key is to have a plan for your gold instead of just having it pile up for no reason. Investing gold into things which make you more gold is always the ideal, but sometimes you don't have anything good to spend it on or need a couple of turns to save up for a critical piece of infrastructure. It's just one of those things you have to play by ear and figure out what works best.

This early in the game I wouldn't worry about maximizing expenses too much, since most indy troops are trash and you'd be better off building infrastructure instead. We're getting close to the point where you should start worrying though.

The secret isn't about whether you save or spend but rather knowing what you want. If you need an army of crossbowmen later on then those 2 your getting are worth it. If your army however has no place for them then it is just money being spent for the sake of spending it. Know what you want and spend your money and gems to get it.

Speaking of tight budgets, somebody has definitely too much spare cash to be able to hire all those mercs.

After the first handful of turns I generally ignore the mercs unless I need muscle under the sea and one fits the bill.

Right. I hate to do this with so much time remaining, but there is a decent chance that I will not be able to perform my turn within the next 24 hours and as such I am requesting an extension.

Again, I hate to do it with so many of you having already turned in your turn, and with so much time remaining, but if the events that I suspect might render me unable to take my turn come to pass, chances are high that I would not be able to contact you guys to convey my inability to finish the turn.

Nothing wrong at all with requesting an extension if you need it. The hosting has been pushed back for 24 hours. If you don't need it that's good, but better safe than sorry.
