Better booze names.

What is "Potato wine" Surely, if you use potatoes in a still, the end product is VODKA!

Maybe Bloated Tubers could become "Dwarven Vodka"?

[Adjective] Vodka is copyrighted specifically, dwarven beer for example is not though even though that would undergo the same rules, as well as generic wine '[adjective] wine' would be copyrightable but there is a generalisation clause in the game because there is no specific variety of grape to determine what it might be emulating. (source)

Im not sure there is a super large priority to fix this, but i think Toady was just being careful (and slightly less careful) in naming schemes.

No. Vodka is spirits, simply fermenting potatoes would indeed produce potato wine/beer.

Surely if you make it at a still it is a distilled spirit.  The wines should be brandies, the beers whiskeys, and so forth.

No, distillation has nothing to do with stills except the name.   :)

But some vanilla alcohols called as distillery products. Swamp whiskey, river spirits, dwarven rum. Probably, sunshine.

The concept of terroirs would be a good idea to implement, so that we might have a Wine of the Three Angles, produced in the region of the Three Angles; it would require Legendary workers on these productions to have a product notorious for its quality. Other edible products such as cheese might be covered, along with some other non-food items.

Whether or not it's called vodka the still produces beer, wine and spirits, there is distillation happening. So there's no reason it couldnt be vokda, potato spirits, or something similar.

That said i also don't mind dwarves drinking shitty sounding potato wine or beer either. I'd prefer all options were there, maybe a bad brewer makes beer, good wine and expert spirits.

Drink names aren't hard coded you can change them to whatever you want. Some people want Potato Wine, others want Spud Spirits both are correct (at least while one workshop is able to make all drinks). That's why Toady goes to the trouble of making customizable raws.

The fact that the workshop currently known as a Still can produce beers & wines is an oversight/simplification. Brewing, Vinification, and Distilling are all actually different processes that ideally should be separated into different professions (Brewer, Vintner, Distiller) and performed at different workshops (Brewery, Winery, Still).

No, distillation has everything to do with stills, that's why stills have that name.

The separate workshops already exist.  Making non-distilled alcohol is just leaving something in a container with yeast until it ferments.  For wine and cider that's fruit juice (screw press), for beer it's mash (which is very loosely speaking wet flour with yeast which means a millstone or quern), and for mead it's honey, possibly diluted (screw press again).  For weird stuff like plump helmets I assume you either mince or press it or both and put it in water (kitchen and/or screw press).  You can probably make any of these with environmental yeast, though it's possible eg. beer may have been invented after bread yeast was already domesticated.

That these aren't either detailed out (other than mead) or just simplified into "kitchen" suggests that it's the still part that's important.
Possibly for safety.  Dwarves ferment some weird stuff and if you have good temperature control you can distill just the ethanol off, And if you can do that you can distill again to get the methanol you really want out of the water and other stuff you don't care so much about.  Anything made from a real material non-distilled alcohol can be safely made from wouldn't need the still unless the dwarves just distilled everything on general principle.

I’ve just been through my raws and changed all the ‘parsnip wine’ and boring drink names to things like thelgrim’s golden ale, trollbrew, and Ironhand’s Sour stout. Four of the plant raws have them. I can pm if anyone wants.

Tatty Toddy? Murphy Molotov? Yam Bock? Tuber Toothpaste?

(Five Star Batata?)

(I always think we should make be making Vetch Bitter from Bitter Vetch. Or is that Bitter-Vetch Bitter? A bit o' Best Bitter Betch Bitter, bitte barman!

On actual topic: There are loads and loads of names of alcoholic drinks, almost as if almost every tiny corner of humanity has at one point wondered what deliberately fermenting something would be like. Whether grain, fruit, root vegetable, pulse, nut, honey, milk, flowerheads... You may think there's some logic, such as wine is always from fruit (but barleywine, elderflower wine, coconut wine) or beer always from grain (ginger beer, the acormentioned potato beer). And active distillation might bring consistency but maize can become whiskey or vodka, rye can become korn, whisky is always barley but barley (as well as becoming whiskey) can be made into gin so long as it has come within earshot of some juniper berries being crushed.

In-game, perhaps we could enforce "it's only a Foo if you did Bar to a Baz..." much more strictly, and try to steer clear of names like Madeira, m'dear, when they are too Roundworld-Geographical.  But there's a lot of implicitly (if not legally) locale-tied names. Saki, Tequila, Scrumpy that might be fun to include, even if only as a 'unique' procedural property of a given civilisation.
