We might just want to assign FCF 3 to convoy duties in theoretically any zone if we are doing that.

It's a lot of ocean to cover for only 2 ships. This was in fact my #1 (though unspoken) complaint about your Plan's use for CDF 1; with the size of our Archipelago, a generic 'cover all the ground' order is likely to be... Ineffective. Expect a lot of 'they got there too late, they already accomplished what they set out to do and are gone already'. Just not enough ships yet to cover all the ground yet.

Basically, while I am constricting FCF 3's area of operations, by doing so, the net they cast should be tighter, to be more likely to catch anyone who may be trying to hit our merchants in said region.

Anyhow, unless anyone has any other plans or good arguements, here is where my votes will lie:

I would point out that using a Spear for convoy *protection* is a very poor idea indeed---tying them to a convoy reduces their speed advantage. Much better to send them out specifically to hunt down convoy raiders, if the enemy even deploys any. Niflungs will be IDEAL for convoy protection once we render them obsolete---they are slow, sure, but more than fast enough to keep up with a merchantman, and their heavy armor and armament will deter any average merchant raider.

Given Discord discussion, it sounds like going full convoy escort with only a handful of units on even so much as shore bombardment duty is going to leave us very, very, very vulnerable to a potentially nasty series of defeats in detail.

We don't want to give an ultra-detailed plan because, well, it wouldn't work so well. I think we're going to want to break up those nice neat units somewhat, and allow individual Spears to be assigned to convoy duty. Niflungs need to be deployed to battle as they're our only heavy ship capable of reasonably engaging an armored cruiser (if properly supported).

Quote
War Plan Turquoise
CDF 1, FCF 1 and FCF 2 are grouped together (though they can still be deployed independently where appropriate, of course) and deployed into a combat stance, ready to sail out to meet the enemy if they show inclination of wanting a fleet battle (with a fleet we can confidently engage, anyway). While not engaged in a fleet battle or hunting/deterring enemy units they will provide support as possible to ground forces. In order to draw the enemy into a full fleet battle, all our efforts will be focused on blockading the central island from all incoming supplies and moving as many men to the island as possible.

FCF 3 and FCF 4 will be assigned to trade protection, escorting convoys or hunting merchant raiders as necessary. If within some weeks no merchant raiders are detected they will be reassigned to combat missions in the islands as necessary. They will also focus their efforts on the central island's support and whatnot.

So this leaves us less vulnerable to things like "well you assigned all your guys to shore bombardment, so as the enemy showed up to each combat location with a full fleet your dispersed units were easily overwhelmed" and suchlike. It is also more general which according to PJ will allow for a little more flexibility in combat missions.

Winter, 1890, Design Phase.

The Sothweg claims that the Spear and Glave sunk are inaccurate. They are merely heavily damaged and need repairs. Though, the Glave was at very bad risk of sinking due to how far it was from one of our ports. We are lucky a storm didn't come in and cause her to go under, and that the Sothweg's never spotted us again as we were heading home. The Spear had a much easier time returning to a friendly port. The Bardiche and Brandistock also suffered medium damage, while the Partisan had only light damage and has already finished its repairs, ready to be sent out once again.

The army is pleased with our work, and expect us to be done taking the territory that was rightfully ours in only a few months, though note that the damage done to some of the islands to the east could be problematic.

Due to the war, our budget has grown by another 4 PP. Keep protecting our freedom.

Well, finish work on our two projects, spend one die fixing the computer as a revision, spend our remaining three on what...

Im leaning towards one of four options, consisting of
 >replacing the 2" guns and otherwise buying toys for marines
 >Fortification projects
 >Spotter balloons so I can get prissy about utility and effectiveness of those again, specifically the baseless stigma against them
 >Camouflage(probably of the dazzle type) -edit- It appears the enemy is using this camouflage, as a result we may simply wish to copy some of the WW2 US camo-type thingies, like the false bow-wave thing.

And now, a new design fer people to have fits over. Constructive criticism welcome.

Quote from: Gyrnwrack-Class Cruiser 7kt
Developed as a competitor to the Sword Class Cruiser proposals, the Gyrnwrack Class(Named for notable towns of Nemorland) is similar in many respects. Coming in at 7kt, each vessel is armed with two turrets of two 9" guns for her main battery, six turrets of twin 6" guns, eight single 4" guns, and just for kicks, a quartet of mounts for 2" guns(or rather, their intended successor). Measuring in at 400ft long and with a 60ft beam, the ship is designed for a 20ft draft.
Propelled by three turbines powered by four boilers turning two shafts, the design speed of the Gyrnwrack is intended to be 24 knots at flank speed, with a cruising speed of 15 knots.
Armor is composed of Bolstad Steel, with 6" on turrets and the conning tower, 1" on gun shields, 2.5" deck armor over the citadel, and 6" belt armor over the citadel, thinning to 2" over the rest of the ship, and thinning further to 1" at the bow and stern.
Two tripod masts, reaching some 75ft above the deck, are fitted to the ship. The first is just aft of the bridge(and just forward of the forward funnel), the second is just aft of the second funnel. Each has provisions for one 2" gun to be mounted.
Two Main Battery Central Director Firing Systems are fitted to the ship, with secondary rangefinders also located on the B and X turrets.
No less than 10 spotlights dot the vessel to provide external communication, each mast is equipped for signal flags, and a highly redundant telephone links the vessel, with voice pipes connecting absolutely critical areas.
General layout is as follows: Bow, A and B turrets with two single 4" flanking B turret, Bridge with wing 2" mounts, forward mast, forward funnel with flanking 4" mounts, forward 6" mounts, aft funnel with flanking 4" mounts, aft 6" mounts, aft mast, X and Y mounts, with 4" guns flanking X turret.
Turret layout is as follows: A- Dual 9", B- Dual 6", 1P&1S-Dual 6", 2P&2S- Dual 6", X- Dual 6", Y- Dual 9". All turrets are traversed via electric motors, with elevation powered by hydraulics powered, inturn, by electric systems.

Quote from: Bardiche-class Armored Cruiser
The Bardiche Class is an armored cruiser design intended for beating beat up lesser cruisers, stealing their lunch money, and *maybe* joining the line of battle every now and then. Coming in at 7kt, each vessel has a main battery of two 9" guns, a secondary battery of twelve 6" guns mounted in superstructure casemates four to a side, a tertiary battery of eight single 4" guns in hull casemates a deck below the main battery, and six 2" guns scattered around the ship as last ditch "holy shit their rushing us" weapons.

Propulsion is provided by four steam turbines turning two screws, generating about 15,000 ihp. The ship is expected to be capable of 24 knots at flank speed and 15 knots while cruising.

The ship uses Bolstad Steel for armor protection (see infobox at the end for details). Special emphasis was placed on ensuring the survivability of the engine compartments and magazines in addition to what is standard in the industry to minimize the risk of being immobilized in combat. This will, in theory, allow the ship to better survive encounters with superior forces by making sure that it can always survive long enough to nope the fuck out of there.

Two tripod masts are fitted to the ship. The first is just aft of the bridge (and just forward of the forward funnel), the second is just aft of the second funnel.

Fire control consists of two MBCDFS systems, each with its own rangefinder, with secondary rangefinders also located on both main battery turrets.

Ten spotlights are mounted at various points on the vessel to provide both communications with other ships in the fleet and illumination during night battle. Internal communications are also highly reinforced, with redundant telephone lines connecting various stations on the vessel and backup voice pipes connecting critical areas for use in the event of loss of electricity.

Wrack-class Protected Cruiser
A large vessel meant for getting relatively close and blasting enemies full of holes, the Wrack-class is a protected cruiser, meaning that there is no belt to speak of, instead an armored 'deck' over the vitals (magazines, machinery, etc.) is utilized as a catchall protection scheme, while the (many) barbettes and turrets and fairly heavily armored so that it can't be easily exploded, as that would be unfortunate.

Utilizing turbines to make 25 knots and displacing about 7000 tons, the Wrack carries 8 twin 6" turrets, two (one superfiring) fore and two (again one superfiring) aft, the rest spaced down the sides. It carries a scattering of 2" guns across the superstructure for work against any hypothetical MTBs or such that can't easily be blown out of the water by ridiculous numbers of 6" HE shells. On either side of the funnel (where a 6" turret would be impractical due to its need for substantial belowdecks space) sits a twin deck-mounted torpedo launcher, completing the Wrack's ability to destroy anything at sea by removing its ability to see the target, shoot the target, and finally hitting enemies with torpedoes to finish them. It carries three reloads for each tube, in an armored magazine.

Its armor scheme is based on the 3" armored sloped deck, which increases to 3.5" over engines and 4.5" over/around magazines and taper down to 1" near the ends of the ship, covering every section of the ship with some amount of protection against shellfire, especially lighter (and more plentiful) shells, while the magazines and engines are pretty much immune to the 6" shellfire we expect to face. 5" of protection on the conning tower and fire control positions provides the extra protection necessary to keep fighting even when the upperworks get blasted with HE fire.

As ever, the structure and machinery is subdivided to reduce flooding, coal bunkers are utilized to protect parts of the ship from both torpedoes (near the waterline, anyway) and shellfire, and the ship is built much tougher than it needs to be in order to allow it to go beyond the expected in surviving crippling damage.

Quote
Resolute-class Armored Cruiser
Based on the Niflung, the Resolute-class armored cruiser is effectively just an evolution of the design to 7000 tons. Moving speed up to 21 knots with the increased room and improved efficiency of turbine engines being installed from the start, Bolstad Armor belt and deck capable of resisting its own main battery from 3000 out to 15000 yards, and a main battery of two twin 9" turrets fore and aft, with not one but TWO whole superfiring twin 6" turrets (one fore and one aft, of course) on the centerline, it provides a similar but noticeably different profile from the older Niflungs. A set of two additional twin 6" turrets and 8 shielded 4" guns per side of the superstructure round out the armament, providing us with a very capable combatant.

The main battery turrets are our standard twin turrets, the armored very heavily indeed, meant to resist 9" fire from the front and at any point on the barbette so that the magazines can't be easily taken out of action or set alight. The 6" turrets carry 4" of Bolstad Steel on the front, thinning to 2" at the back, providing comprehensive protection with lessened weight. Our rangefinders and advanced fire control is all integrated into protected positions, obviously with the option to just not use the Mark 2 'Eyeball' until it's fixed. Notably, the conning tower is also armored with 6" of Bolstad steel to resist incoming fire and prevent lighter HE from rendering the ship uncontrolled or destroying its ability to range on targets.

The armored citadel is not the only armor on the vessel: Being aware of the risks of high explosive shells fired at the present short battle ranges, an extended belt covers the rest of the areas of the ship with 1" of Bolstad Steel, capable of detonating a 6" shell early so that it cannot pierce deeper into the vessel. The armored deck, however, terminates with the citadel athwartships, as HE is not fired at extreme range because AP's capability to deal much more serious damage is desirable when very few hits can be achieved. The main belt covers the entirety of the ship's vitals, and the coal bunkers are focused on providing a form of torpedo protection---the firetight doors and walls of the coal bunkers are repurposed as watertight doors and a sort of simple torpedo bulkhead to prevent hits a few feet under the waterline from being immediately fatal. There is an additional inch-thick plate over the propeller shaft and aft machinery sections, deep in the ship, to provide a little bit of crucial extra protection for those sections to prevent things like hits that warp the propeller shaft and cause it to rip open large sections of the hull and flood all of the engine rooms and whatnot.

Obviously, the ship is built with our trademark durability. Our experience and design effort invested in increasing survivability allows us to have more and superior pumping arrangements and more comprehensive flooding protection and better-subdivided machinery compartments than other vessels without sacrificing as much in terms of displacement or size. Additional bulkheads, fire suppression, etc. are all combined to make the ship extremely durable, a necessity given they may end up facing off against larger opponents and trading body blows with bigger ships.

The Aether-class Airship

Made of light woods built to house a simple flat boat, it has two levels of cargo space in it's Hull, with an engine in the back. This engine in turn powers a propeller to move it forward.

However, the main components are rigid balloon sections filled with hydrogen, supported by an steel frame that runs through the ship's wooden hull. Rather, these balloons can be filled with hydrogen to lift the craft into the sky. Up here, it can move at a decent clip, carrying supplies far out of reach of enemy ships. In addition, it can also act as a spotter for ships, easily able to stay aloft for weeks at a time, shadowing our own ships.

For weapons, it only boasts a single cannon connected into the bottom of the hull, waterproofed so that when it is sitting in the water it does not get damaged. Likewise, we also have a multiple spotlights at the helm of the ship for shining light down on the ocean to look for them in the night through a sweeping pattern. This allows the ship to more or less use gravity to power their shots at ships that won't be able to fight back.(though this will need the testing program we have running to teach how to fire them)

The main weakness of this aircraft are storms. A lightning strike will bring the entire thing down, forcing it to avoid them. Sometimes, this can be down by going above, but most times, we need to head at an angle to avoid them. Either way, we can't travel through or under them.

They are expected to be somewhat cheap, making use of wood for the ship and steel for the frame and engine.(which does have openings to let the smoke out, and fireproofed) They shall serve as our eyes in the sky, illuminating at night and perfect for supply runs to our sea-bound ships.

 >Actual boats(why)
 >Rigid ballonets(no, theres toomuch expansion for that.)
 >Steel frame(you sure? Thats gonna eat alot of payload)
 >Cannon(Err... what cannon?)

Those are my concerns. You want to see a preceding proposal fer an airship, you need to back to when we had the list of all the proposed designs.
