Papu snorts. "And just what," says he, "d'you suppose we do instead? Or have you forgotten they took our stuff? Now we gets to take their stuff!" Papu cackles. "That's called justice, see!"

Papu stops and thinks a moment. "But mebbe," says he, frowning, "mebbe this Isaac feller has a point. Get the Trebbies to help us out, then come in with the blood'n'thunder. Yes." Papu nods, grinning. "Yes I like that. But don' tell them Gennervese yet!" cries Papu, shaking a finger. "Don' tell 'em a word! When we're ready for some killin', we'll show 'em we mean business!"

OOC: Hey peeps, sorry for not updating yesterday--I was on a long roadtrip this weekend and couldn't find time to get to the laptop!

Turn 3: Summer 1301

Previous Resolutions:
-- (Success) While the inaugural session of the Forum of Doros explodes with bold speeches and talk of war, eventually the cooler heads of Princes Isaac and Madrick prevail. Elderly Papu can be spotted angrily stroking his chin... (Peace reigns)

-- (Success) An embassy is sent to Trebizond and is warmly received by the Trapezuntine Emperor. After a lavish exchange of gifts, our court-appointed ambassador works out a military alliance with the Emperor himself. In short, our two nations are now militarily bound to assist each other in whatever conflicts are to come.

Foreign News:
--War continues to rage across the remains of the Byzantine Empire, however no major territories have exchanged hands.

--The Mongolian Empire has collapsed into civil war, the state directly North to us is known by the Rus as the Golden Horde.

Local News:
--A year of peace. It has been nearly a century of constant (mostly defensive) warfare--raiding, sieges, and border disputes have dominated the lives of the Theodorans for nearly three generations. It seems as if the stars have aligned to grant the Principality this moment of respite.

--The port of Kalamita has grown from a town of thousands to a small city of over ten thousand. As a result, a new military quota has been set for the region. We are able to call an additional fifteen hundred (1500) men to arms. No plans have been made in regards to their training or equipment.

Current Resolutions:

Resolution 1: Storm Clouds
The new alliance between Trebizond and Theodoro was announced shortly after the return our diplomatic mission to the Pontus. Despite the prosperity, this has reignited the discussion about the state of the Genovese colonies. Unfortunately, the merchants of Italia--who are as deeply involved with the Trapezuntine state as we--have noticed our diplomatic maneuvering and we will most likely be unable to launch a surprise attack against them. However, Trebizond is extremely likely to honor their alliance with us in this matter.

A.) Blood and thunder! Stab and thrust! The armies of Trebizond and Theodoro will crush the Italian invaders. (War is declared)

B.) No. The time is still not right.

Resolution 2: City of the World's Desire...
While our capital, Doros, is the largest settlement in the region, many of our senior officials have pointed out several issues in both the layout and prestige (or rather, lack-thereof) of our fair city. Among the most common criticisms are the facts that most of the local population dwells in the valleys surrounding the naturally defensible plateau that serves as the seat of our state instead of within the walls themselves, the lack of a central palace where the ruling family may all together reside, receive dignitaries both local and foreign, and carry out the actual administration of the state, and our reliance on mostly... practical means of protection.

To this end, our archivists have brought the Princes the most recent painting of the city they could find--for the purposes of appraising possible renovations...
OOC: Which will be drawn by yours truly (if you desire)
A.) Perhaps it would be best to modernize and centralize our bastion of civilization. It is true that the cites of Trebizond and Constantinople are far more famous than ours, it is also said that even the city of Genoa eclipses Doros' reputation...
OOC: Anyone who submits a proposal that either textually or visually describes the renovations will have that plan considered before anything I can think of, should the resolution pass.

B.) No. With war looming, it would be foolish to invest in this inevitably costly project. We must remain practical until a prosperous realm can be consolidated!

OOC: There are a lot of options right now and I can't anticipate all of them! If you want to change course, or assign the new recruits, or poach Khanate lands someone will have to propose a resolution of their own! Don't worry, I will always move the game forward when there are no resolutions, but remember, you can do anything!

Prince Teja, a man of the ever rarer old gothic stock rose up.

The time is now, gentlemen. The Mongol is looking to his own affairs, leaving us to ours. And ours should be obvious: Genoa must be destroyed!

A.) Blood and thunder! Stab and thrust! The armies of Trebizond and Theodoro will crush the Italian invaders. (War is declared)

As for Doro proper, i see the appeal of renovating the city, but that is a lengthy affair, which cannot be interrupted by war so i want to suggest a different resolution:

C.) That the Decision on the City of Doros renovations be tabled until after the War with the Genoese

Cackling in the corner. "Y'see? Y'see?" wheezes Papu. "This guy gets it! This guy gets it!" Papu continues snickering for a good five minutes straight... it's rather awkward, really.

"N-now then," gasps Papu after awhile, "abou'... abou' them new guys... abou' them... Calamaties or whatever. Kalamit. Kalamiddin. Kalamitan. We gotta train 'em up, see?" Papu nods to himself. "Yes. Put... bows in their hands or somethin'. With... with horses. Yes. Like them horse archers you see up north, eh? Like... them horse archers what do all the fightin' with each other." Papu nods some more, slowly. "Yes. Yes... yes-s-s-s"

...He's asleep.

New Resolution: Allocating the Kalamitan Recruits
We've got 1500 new recruits to work with! How shall we equip them?

A.) Bows and horses, maybe some light armor-- Mongol style!
B.) Eh, we don't need to outfit these guys just yet.
C, D, etc.) Some other choice of equipment (write-in)

@Superdorf,

OOC: Yea! Its a-okay, but if you ever want to propose something that isn't yes/no I suggest a short description and list of choices under the topic header.

OOC: Also, good time to tell/remind everyone that not voting on a resolution will effectively veto it. They'll be counted as "failed", which simply means a consensus could not be met.

EDIT:OOC: Housekeeping resolutions, like training troops, et al. will be able to pass with only a single vote. So if you see something small that needs addressing just throw it out there--itll go through unless specifically opposed.

OOC:Sorry for probably butchering Papu's insane image!

The Gothic Chronicles: Part 1
--Compiled by the Monk Osuin--
*Isaac and Papu discover the runestone*

In ancient times, the Greeks thought this land of ours constituted the end of the Earth, and no doubt, the Empires of the East thought the same. Rome would travel no further North than the peninsula, and the Rus will not come South. Gothia is, to many peoples, a boundary. But we know better. In truth, it is a crossroads. Of empires. Of cultures. Of trade. Our ancestry stems from the Greeks, Scythians, Germans, and Norsemen. We have been molded by the greatest empires on Earth. And our enemies are many. We are not the the only people to know these things though. Despite its peripheral relationship to Europe, the Italian Republics, the Mongols, and the Byzantine Rump states are well aware of the importance of the Black Sea, and thus Gothia. Historically, trade has flowed primarily through the Anatolian Peninsula, but it is much safer--and cheaper--to travel North these days. That is what has brought both the Mongols and the Genovese to our doorstep--but that is a story you already know...

The Princes of Theodoro thought these things and many more such thoughts in their travels throughout the land. You see, the heirs of Theodahad were many and of bold stock, and because of it, prone to wanderings. The Prince Isaac and Papu, who was also a prince and Isaac's kinsman but of different blood and many winters his elder, were two such wanderers. The land around Doros was ancient, and held many secrets, and it was a great pastime of the nobility of the land to unearth the places of their forebears. The two princes had set out a fortnight prior to scour the rocky hills to the Northwest of the capital. This morning they had left their guards in the valley and made the climb to an unmarked and unnamed plateau.

Papu had aged greatly and after stopping several times threw himself and his cloak over the shoulders of Isaac. "To the top!" He commanded, "A great discovery Papu cannot make sitting!"

Isaac chuckled, and did as he commanded, for it was difficult to not love Papu, and his half-sanity endeared him to many. "You have grown heavy for a man of your build, Uncle!" He teased.

"And you have grown slow! But soft, the owl does not mock the bear for his insolence." Papu replied, stroking and straightening out his long beard.

"He stabs him!" Isaac shouted.

Papu laughed, "Ah, so you have learnt something, boy."

They jabbed and jested all the way to the top, so that when they summited the great mound both were out of breath and panting. Isaac knelt on a gravel patch where the ground leveled out and rolled Papu to one side, setting him down as softly as possible before rolling over himself.

"Look" Papu said, "Over yonder." Before Isaac had fully caught his breath.

They rose simultaneously to view a great stone monolith, which sprouted from a cairn so overgrown it appeared to have grown out of the earth itself. "I have never seen such a stone" Isaac commented, "From which of our ancestors does it hail."

"It is Varangian!" Papu declared, "Not of our ancestors, but explorers--a runestone."

They stood silently and beheld the runic devices upon the stone. Though neither could read it, many years later it would be claimed it read:

Here lays Stigr the Far-Travelled, explorer, trader, killer of men, and friend to the seas.

They stood a moment more and allowed the wind to comb their long hair, green cloaks, and purple robes. Finally, Papu drew one of his two famed daggers and flicked it up in the air.

"What are you doing?" Isaac asked.

Papu did not respond, and instead crossed slowly to the runestone. He caressed a blank spot on the stone, where time had eroded the markings and without warning let out a great cry before driving his dagger into the stone with all his might, such that he stumbled and fell to his knees, nearly losing his footing entirely.

"Uncle!" Isaac chided, "You should be so incautious."

"Guffaw, see!" Papu said and patted his handiwork.

Isaac beheld the stone beneath his palm and it where the dagger had struck it had left the tip impaled and chipped away at the crumbling surface in all directions, thereafter leaving a curved trail where Papu had dragged his dagger--in the light the bit of metal shone bright like a star that was shooting. "Why have you done that Uncle?"

"I am now part of the story! It is great luck to be mentioned in such stories Isaac, here--" Papu held out his broken dagger, "Make a mark of your own."

Isaac took the dagger and frowned. More of Papu's nonsense, though he supposed it would not hurt to carve away a bit of the runestone. He found the area which held the least markings and carved the head of an eagle, so that it was looking up at the rest of the stone, perhaps it would bring Gothia luck if Papu was right.

Papu nodded and lay backwards upon the cairn. "We have done well today, Isaac, this is a great find! All thanks to Papu!" He said before closing his eyes. "Varangians..." He wondered allowed.

"The Emperor has Varangians still, men of the North and further away, they say, and ferocious in battle." Isaac recited from one of his many lessons.

"I wonder if the Trebbies have such men at their command..." Papu muttered as he drifted off to sleep.

Isaac simply shook his head and smiled before sitting down beside the sleeping old man and looked off unto the ridges and valleys of the Gothic land, where the wind blew the trees, and the sun beat down on the dark green of the land. Papu was right, it was a great find at least, and perhaps a good omen for the days ahead.

Turn 4: Winter 1301
1st Gothic-Genovese War

Previous Resolutions:
-- The Princes decide on war with Genoa.

-- A proposal for the renovation of the capital is tabled.

-- *really good roll for this one* 1500 new recruits are inducted as Énoploi Taxidiótes, heavy horse archers maintained by local nobility.

Foreign News:
-- War continues to rage across the remains of the Byzantine Empire, which is making small gains in the Balkans.

Local News:
-- Theodoro declares war on Genoa. Trebizond is quick to declare their support. Allegedly, there are celebrations in Venetia...

-- The towns of Caulita, Lusta, and Soldaia shrink due to the Trapezuntine raids. Cembalo does not suffer as badly due to occupation. Theodosia does not suffer as badly due to its primarily Gothic population. The town of Vosporo grows into a small city of over ten thousand.

Summer 1301: The Caffa Campaign
Starting forces.
Theodoro: 11,500 -- Mustered in Doros, 13 ships -- at Kalamita
Trebizond: 30,000 -- Embarked at Trebizond (Sailing for Kalamita), 40 ships -- at Trebizond
Genoa: 12,000 -- Spread evenly among settlements in Crimea (2000 in each), 20 ships -- Blockading Kalamita

Battle of the Coast of Kalamita.

Summary.
Following the Theodoran declaration of war, a small Genovese squadron of 20 ships is dispatched to blockade the port at Kalamita. They are caught off guard by an aggressive naval landing by the Trapezuntine War Fleet.

10AM March 7th -- The Genovese squadron breaks their blockade after spotting the Trapezuntine Fleet, they are chased down by the Trapezuntines and the Theodoran fleet.

11AM -- 15 Trapezuntine ships engage the rearmost Genovese squadron. 10 Trapezuntine ships quickly catch up with the next one. The 13 Theodoran ships engage the Genovese rear guard shortly after. The rest of the Trapezuntine fleet forms a rearguard to pick up survivors and prevent any surprise attacks.

12AM -- The battle is over quickly. Three Genovese squadrons, 15 ships, are destroyed entirely. The Trapezuntines lose 3 ships in the process. The Theodorans lose 1. The Genovese admiral escapes with his personal squadron.

Late March.
-- The Trapezuntine Army lands at Kalamita--28,000 make it ashore.

-- Caulita, Lusta, and Soldaia are emptied of their fighting men. 4000 Genovese garrison Cembalo, and 8000 man the walls of Caffa.

-- Half of the Trapezuntine Army (14,000) besieges Cembalo. The other half joins up with the army of Theodoro (25,500 together) and besieges Caffa. They plan an assault on the city.

April.
-- Genoa maintains naval supremacy, blockading Kalamita with 100 ships. Both the Theodoran and Trapezuntine fleets remain at port.

-- Cembalo is evacuated by sea. The 14,000 Trapezuntines loot the town and remain quartered there. The 4000 Genovese are transferred to Caffa. Almost the entire garrison consists of medium and heavy infantry.

-- The Trapezuntine general wins the post of commander of the Siege of Caffa, to the disgruntlement of the Theodoran forces. Luckily, he is as aggressively minded as the Princes.

-- Prince Teja is given command of the Theodoran forces.

-- The combined Theodoran-Trapezuntine army encircles Caffa. They begin building siege equipment. Several siege towers in particular.

May.
-- Caffa is bombarded with arrows and stones. The Genovese maintain their discipline.

-- The army at Kalamita as well as the combined forces raid the coast between Caffa and Cembalo. The entire region's Genovese population is either evacuated, enslaved, or killed.

June.
-- Caffa is bombarded with arrows and stones. The bombardment takes its toll.

-- Small trapezuntine garrisons are left along the coast. Most of Theodoro's manpower is tied down at Caffa.

July.
-- The Theodoran and Trapezuntine commanders decide to begin the assault on July 4th at noon. 4 siege towers have been constructed.

The Battle of Caffa.
The situation by 1PM.

The Theodoran and Trapezuntine forces lose 1000 men each. The genovese lose 1900. A number of fleeing regiments causes a rout that causes the reserves to panic. They nearly clog the interior gate to the upper city, but the Genovese commander orders his men to push back the panicked troops... at any cost. In the end, they surrender without further blood shed. Over 5000 men are disarmed and held prisoner at the North gate. After losses from bombardment, only four thousand men remain to guard the upper city and citadel.

2PM -- The commanders of both sides call for a ceasefire, but negotiations for a peaceful end to the siege fizzle out in anger. The next assault commences at 3PM.

The situation by 4PM.

Using ladders, the second assault commences. Assaulting the inner gate, the Theodoran and Trapezuntine forces lose 600 and 500 men, respectively--the Genovese lose 1400 and rout.

Assaulting the South gate, the Theodoran and Trapezuntine forces lose 500 men each, while the Genovese regiment is destroyed entirely.

The Genovese commander is killed during the assault, and the remaining soldiers cannot reach the citadel gate before they are encircled. Many die before they surrender. Ultimately, over 7000 men are taken prisoner.

Ending forces.
Theodoro: 9,400 -- Garrisoned in Caffa (now Theodosia), 12 ships -- at Kalamita
Trebizond: 26,000 -- Garrisoned in Caffa (now Theodosia) and Cembalo, 37 ships -- at Kalamita
Genoa: 0 (7000 imprisoned), 100 ships -- Maintaining naval superiority

OOC: This first operation has gone CRAZY well.
Campaign Result: Outstanding Success.
Caffa, now Theodosia, has been recaptured and the Genovese largely ousted from our shores. We have even defeated them at sea, though their superior navy has forced us to remain in port. The Siege of Caffa was one of the bloodiest battles in the region with over 10,000 men dead or injured, and yet it was a battle for the chronicles as the descendants of Rome proved their might against all odds. But it is not over yet... the Genovese still hold territory nearby. Who knows what is next. Our aggressive military policy and synergy with our Pontic cousins has granted us a historic victory!

Updated Map:

UPDATES:

Report on the Army of Theodoro at the start of the Coastal Campaign:
The venerable Prince Papu has taken the initiative to organize the training of the 1500 new recruits from Kalamita. It is decided that they will train as horse archers. Mongolian and Hungarian advisors are brought in, as well as local nobles. The stock of local horses is appraised and rather suddenly a great debate about the best implementation of mounted archers begin. When all is said and done, everyone is convinced of the usefulness of a cavalry unit more similar to the Rus' Druzhina than the Mongolian horse archer. They are drawn from the ranks of wealthy landowners, gentry, and local or regional nobility--losses to other units are replaced by the Kalamitan recruits. They have sturdy horses that are suited to traveling, but neither particularly fast nor brave. They are heavily armed, possessing bows, swords, and shields, and moderate-to-well armored--suited mostly in metal lamellar and chainmail. They are organized into companies of 500, led by the leaders of Doros, Funa, and Kalamita, respectively. They are known as Énoploi Taxidiótes.

All in all, the Army of Theodoro is able to muster 11,500 men.
-- 2000 are heavily armed and armored professional footsoldiers
-- 4000 are moderately armed and armored semi-professional levies
-- 4000 are lightly mixed slingers
-- 1500 are the versatile Énoploi Taxidiótes

Current Resolutions:

Resolution 1: The Customary Olive Branch.
With the shocking success of both our land and sea forces these past sixth months perhaps it is time to try and force an early peace on Genoa. The loss of so many regular infantry is sure to leave them vulnerable elsewhere, and they will be desperate for more men to defend their far-flung colonies. On the other hand, the Trapezuntines have further interests in the area, and will be keen on our continued assistance against Genoa. Those are but a few points, there is much to consider in the question of peace. Of course, there is no guarantee they won't fight on to secure better terms...

A.) Offer a harsh treaty, conceding all of their colonies to us and forcing a war indemnity upon them. Attempt to negotiate for Matrega or another Tamanian colony to appease our Trapezuntine allies.

B.) Offer a mild meaty, conceding all or most of their colonies to us, but with no further conditions.

C.) There will be no peace! The Genovese are now blood enemies of Theodoro, and having shown their weakness, must be crushed for their insolence.

My men died there at the Gates and Walls of Caffa. They shed their blood in the streets of Caffa and gave their last breath on the hills of its Citadel. And you would have that sacrifice sullied by some minor peace? The Genoan Traders have no place in Gothic Lands. I say this will not end until they are all back in Italy.
