Davinci's Innovations
« on: May 30, 2019, 02:27:04 am »

One should apply the great renaissance inventor/innovator/artist/etc's works into dwarf fortress
e.g String operated automatons that are capable of conducting rudimentary ,machine-programmed movements
Massive crossbows as improvements to ballistas

Da Vinci was I think beyond the 1400 cut-off point.  Though not by much.

Does 1450s-1500s count as past the technological limit?
If yes, that would not allow any significant renaissance-era innovations tho.

I mean Da Vinci-esque devices have shown up in fairly traditional fantasy settings before, so it doesn't seem right out to me, but I guess it is technically past the cut-off point.

The somewhat arbitrary limit is 1400, which makes 1450-1500 outside of the range. However, the limit is rather blurred, as you can easily make a case for gunpowder, which was used for military purposes well before 1400 in China, for instance. Also a lot of the sciences that can be researched seem to be a lot more modern than 1400 (mental healthcare, various social discoveries, some medial ones, for instance, while I believe Toady researched the math ones fairly seriously).

I think the 1400 cut-off is more a general rule of thumb than an absolutely rigid law, so Toady could end up incorporating something like this somewhere down the line.

Toady talked about the cut off in an interview once, he said it's surprising when you research it just how much people knew by 1400. Like refraction of light causing rainbows and stuff. They couldn't prove a lot of it, but they certainly theorized a lot.

Trigonometry is nearly 2000 years old as another example.

You really want to look backwards between one and two millennia.  The ancient Greeks invented a good number of quite elaborate mechanical devices, which the Romans mostly destroyed because they saw them as a threat.

Indeed. Atomic theory was initially developed in ancient greece, and so are a myriad of other intellectual and applied innovations.

That was kind of a cross-over between engineering and astronomy.  There aren't presently any cross-overs between disciplines in the intellectual setup.

The effects of intertextuality/consilience of practices would certainly be intriguing in the myth and magic as magic would almost inevitably collide with science in a high fantasy reality.
Procedurally generated discoveries, errors, and dogma will also add to the realism of cultural evolution. (although this will probably deserve a thread of its own right)
