I'm not getting crashes at 64x64, and it looks better than the 32x32 tiles with the game's lanczos scaling.

24x24 doesn't crash either.

Should note that the game's zoom levels seem to be hard coded so no matter your tile size, these are the resolutions you get:
zoom level - zoom pct. - tile size
#050%16x16
#175%24x24
#2100%32x32
#3125%40x40
#4150%48x48
#5175%56x56
#6200%64x64

So a 24x24 pack would still look good at 24x24 and 48x48. A 20x20 pack would only look good at 40x40. No room in this world for a 9x9 pack or 18x18 pack, unless they change the 56x56 to 54x54.

Bad news. Getting crashes with 64x64 tiles involving creature graphics. I don't know exactly what triggers it, but switching body, hair, wearables, wieldables, and saddles back to 32x32 fixes it.

Excluding UI and world map, it looks like everything else can mostly be upscaled fine, except for a display issue when clicking on items like rocks and figurines:
