Monster Hunter made monster worse
« on: November 05, 2018, 12:29:27 am »

So I started to get some monster hunters, and wanted to open the caverns for them to do some hunting, and so I could fish.

A macedwarf goes down first aaaannnd...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The bat stole the mace from him and is now beating him to death with it. I'm terrified.

I think you mean “It is terrifying.”  :P

Is this realistic? Have animals ever used weapons, improvised or no?

It's realistic in DF. Though it is usually an axe the bat steals, not mace.

Good thing it is a blunt weapon, you won't have so many body parts to remove. Monster slayers are better used as surface meat shield and detectors (a tavern on the path of attackers). As seen in this example they are no match for viler cavern creatures.

Though I must say that this particular bat is kind of crappy - how many times does it need to hit the monster slayer with a steel mace to down him?

Bats have only bite attack, which suggest it is enough to have functioning grasp (they have fingers) to be able to wrestle the weapon out and bash (or whatever attack the weapon has) the enemy with it. The most dangerous is still GCS, because it can wrestle several pieces of armour and weapons from the dwarf, and beat it do death with them, apart from the usual poisonous biting.

Not counting humans forcing weapons on them or natural weapons like the archerfish's weaponized spit, some chimps have been known to use spears. I'll see if I can find anything else on weapons used by animals.

*Ok. Some of these seem to stretch the definition of the word
"weapon"
, but it does show a few clear cases of animals using objects as weapons.

I have no problem believing, given chimps and bonobos(?) Already using sticks for tools, that if you swung a hatchet or something at them and they managed to take it from you and decide to hold onto it, they may very well start swinging it back at you. Granted theyd almost certainly be just wacking you randomly with it, but given how strong they are it doesnt really matter, does it?

Which is pretty much whats going on here, but df lets anything with a grasp do that, which i absolutely love.

Wait.  Now I'm wondering.  Does Dwarf Fortress support the use of prehensile tails for wielding weapons?

It should if you add the :GRASP: token, at least that's what I suspect. (mouths can :GRASP: , so theoretically so should any appendage.)

Can confirm, I made a T-1000 creature and it was able to grasp with any part of it's body.
