I don't really get fishing and hunting
« on: September 30, 2018, 04:11:15 pm »

Hello

So I 've been playing this games for years but I think I still don't get the basics. So...

Hunting, why some times work and sometimes don't, I always do the same thing.

Quivers check, bolts a TON of bolts, crossbow, of cource yes, a trapper, yes yes. In my previous fortress I have 300+ meat, and now I am playing on a new fortress (but in mod called masterworks) in a world where only one dwarf survived(I have the world untouched if someone wants it) and I embarked somewhere with the same stuff I always do. No meat.... only sometimes my hunter catches a live animal and it just escapes....

Fishing.... well, I have a fishery and a fisherman, and animal traps, I don't have a single fish, in my previous fortress I had 100+...

what are the causes for these outcomes ? how can I control what to hunt? even in the unit screen I can see wild animals but assining a squad to attack it is foolish.

Leave hunters to hunt, don't try to manage them too much. The more they do it the better they'll get. At first they'll run out of bolts before they kill stuff quite often. I find it's useful to give them their own bolt carving workshop and crafting labour. That way, when they run out they take the next best job which is to make more.

Animal traps aren't useful for fishing, really. You don't want the fisherdwarves catching live fish--fish are vermin and I think that just generates you potential pets. I usually specify a fishing zone near the edge of my brook or river, and dwarves with the fishing labor enabled will catch stuff if it's there to catch. I _think_ you get a message if there's nothing to catch in the area that they try to fish in. I once accidentally had my fisherdwarves trying to fish in my well, where there wasn't anything to catch.

I think it's possible to fish in muddy pools and the ocean, but I've never tried it. I'm also pretty sure you aren't required to have a fishing zone, even you're set to "prefer zone fishing." Maybe be sure your dwarves can actually get to the edge of the water--I don't know if they have to be able to path to the water, even though they actually fish from the shore. Like, if your water is a few z-levels below the shore, I don't know if you'll be able to fish in it.

I don't know anything useful about hunting. I never need to do it.

a trapper, yes yes.

... only sometimes my hunter catches a live animal and it just escapes....

"Trapping" and "Hunting" are two completely different things in-game. A trapper catches vermin (and vermin are generally useless); a hunter shoots large game and provides your dwarves with meat. Disable trapping and enable hunting to make your dwarf useful.

Your hunters will not hunt some animals, like ravens. What animals do you see?

It is also possible to have no fish to catch in the ponds of some biomes (dead biomes). Do you see messages from the fisherdwarfs like "There is nothing to catch in the southern swamps"?

People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

I tend to have more trouble getting hunters NOT to hunt and fishers NOT to fish (neglecting labors). Non-prepared fish will not show up in your kitchen/meat list but they will show up in your stocks screen. You need a fishery and a dwarf with the fish cleaning labor enabled to prepare them first. Similarly you need a butchery and a butcher to carve up hunted animals to eat. Sorry if you already know all this.

I've found opening up a cavern layer provides me with all the meat I could ever need, regardless of whether or not I want it. Monster hunters will go down there and slaughter everything they can find and if you use weapon traps to guard the entrance that pretty much doubles it. This is part of the reason I never bother with hunters. They're just werechameleon bait.

Traps are not used for hunting or fishing.
They're used by the useless profession Trapper to trap useless vermin like small songbirds, lizards and rats.
Hunters use crossbow and bolts to hunt big game like elk and bear.
Fisher-dwarves use nothing more than their hands and beards to catch fish.
Give your hunters as little else to do besides hunting or else they tend to do very little hunting.
Same goes for fisher-dwarves.
Also, not designating fishing-zones will give them the freedom of picking whatever spot they'd like to use.

ok..so......trapping is useless. Still, the problem is that they are not hunting or fishing, and the worst is that I believe that there are no animals to hunt and no fish. The only units I see are on dead tab and are all "lathering snail man/woman" as for the others tab, I see an wild boar, but none is hunting it

Do the hunters have equipped crossbows, quivers, bolts in quivers and walkable path to boars?

If near a necromancer tower you need a gate to seal your dwarves underground as soon as possible.  The necromancer tends to attack faster than other enemies for the games I've played.

Note: trapping is not entirely useless. Moghoppers, creepy crawlers, and purring maggots can be turned into edible food, and dwarves will eat any vermin that they like to consume. (Additionally, fire snakes can have valuable liquid fire extracted from them. It's only a trade good, but it's worth 500☼.) It is, as others have said, distinct from hunting and fishing.
