oh look, another thread about markdwarves
« on: September 27, 2018, 07:26:52 am »

44.12 ver here

so i created a 10x10 room with 10 archery range

i created 10 rooms from each archery range and assigned each of them to my markdwarf squad

i have only two dwarves in the squad atm

they are equipped, they have crossbows, access to an ammo stockpile in the same room

they start shootin for a brief time, then they simply stop, go to the meeting hall in no activity mode and stay there

what's wrong?

Oh also, i created 10 orders of 1 minimum dwarf that should train all year

They need a barracks so they can do the rest of their training. They're a military squad. You may not want them to learn how to dodge or wear armour, but they have more of a sense of self-preservation.

They won't stand like robots shooting repeatedly until they level-up. Marksdwarves will use the range as much as melee dwarves will spar. More often at higher levels but not endlessly.

(1 minimum is a myth, might have been true to get around an ancient bug once upon a time, but really needs to be removed from noob guides).

Just make sure they have enough bolts and quivers too of course.

Oh and "assigning a barracks makes them waste time learning hammering by clubbing each other with their crossbows" isn't true either if you hapoen to notice that piece of "advice" anywhere.

Still happening bugs with marksdwarves seems to be:
1) Uniform clash with hunters/miners (switch off both labours for anyone in a squad, ranged or melee). Long-standing military bug.

2) Bolts get stuck in bins. Typical bin bug.

Everything else is working as it should.

Oh, well apart from the lack of tactics in fortress mode anyway. They have one. "Run towards enemy and hit them with whatever is in your hand". Put your marksdwarves in a bunker or something so they can shoot but not run towards the enemy when your force of darkness shows up.

Off-site raids work just fine (proving that they're only doing it to annoy you in fortress mode...).

I've had success in previous versions by making sure their barracks (a weapon rack or armor stand) is in the same area as the archery targets and it's room "covers" all the archery targets. Sure you will have dwarves doing combat drills in the line of fire of others practicing but they won't get hit.

I know some set up archery ranges in the tavern which always looks amusing...

I use a fairly standard setup of a barracks next-door to an archery stand, works OK. By the time I set up a squad I've usually got half a dozen hunters to choose from (don't forget to turn off hunting labour...). The experience possibly increases the time they spend in the archery range, most are Legendary pretty quickly.

Note on enough bolts/hunter conflict: Hunters have, by default (can change), first 100 bolts in fortress. Once embarked with 5 markdswarves/2 melee dwarves to slay a titan...Forget to remove ammo from hunters, and only 1 stack of 25 bolts was picked up.

As far as I can see, bolts are regularly retrieved from ammo stockpiles with bins

for the charge bug, a ceiling is enough on shooting towers

yes, that is the first thing i've done, removing the useless bolts for nonexistant hunters

One quick pointer: the "X minimum" is bugged.  It actually implements "X maximum".  So if you put "1 minimum", only one dwarf can train.  If you put "10 minimum" than any number of dwarfs can train from 1 up to 10.

If you want to drive up marksdwarf skill quickly, go for live training. There are lots of ways to set it up.

Open up the caverns. Watching hunters chase elk birds around the tavern is hilarious, even better than putting your range in there. Gives all your guests basic combat and dicipline skills (so long as they survive).

Some good tips in this thread thanks.

My crossbow dwarves just wont keep their uniforms on... I have a really simple uniform of boots, helm, mail, leggings, gauntlets and crossbow. Its set over clothing and I intentionally don't use woodcutters, miners or hunters in my squad. They sometimes equip their uniform but seem to have taken it mostly off a few minutes later only to complain about being nude. Any ideas?
