I just returned from a 2 year hiatus, lots of new interesting stuff added for sure! It seems Toady is in a current long dev cycle adding stuff before myth gen which is cool. So our dwarves are going to become criminals randomly soon? Sounds interesting lol.
Procedurally generated criminals, not random, there's a difference. Random is where every other migrant wave there's a 20% chance of a dwarf being a criminal.
Procedurally generated is where Smaug the Melty-Flame of Midgits decides in a time before time that he must rule the underworld. To do this he conspires to cause a rebellion in a goblin civ to encourage them to topple their demon ruler so that he can take its place a few years later. The captain of the goblins isn't into rebelling, but his second in command is and happens to be quite partial to platinum warhammers. And hey, guess what, a new dwarf fortress has one on display in it's museum. Smaug applies his influence to a bandit-camp bookkeeper who convinces their warlord to go raid the nearby dorfs, he's planning on swiping the hammer during the raid to give to Smaug's agent, a sexy llama-woman who the bookkeeper has a thing for. Only problem is, dorfs won't open their doors easily. The bookkeeper consults with his spies who tell him that Urist McGuardman of the fortress is feeling depressed, having been dumped by his girlfriend. The bookkeeper sends an agent to convince Urist that his girl was having a fling with the mayor, but don't worry, a bunch of bandits are planning on beating him up for past crimes, just open the door Urist. Please.
Urist opens the door, the bandits storm the fortress, the bookkeeper steals the warhammer, gives it to his llama lover who presents it to Smaug who gives it to the goblin rebel who topples the demon king allowing Smaug to step in, kill the rebel king, take over the civ, learn the secrets of the underworld and take over.
Urist is hammered for being a traitor criminal.
