(1) All Great Ideas Come From the Kotzar: eS

Sunday Best

The council in the Kotzar's igloo is mostly concerned with various ways to get food, but the Church of Lost Colonists is also a concern. It's clearly a threat to order in New Vlanlados, the leaders decide. They also decide that the best way to combat this, is to form their own church.

One cold morning, the surviving Vlanladosians emerge from their igloos for their paltry breakfast of what little fish was caught the day before, cooked on the frozen cast iron stoves sitting out in the snow. A colonist known to many as the Evicted Saint, though nobody knows where he earned his ominous nickname, calls the people to attention. "People of New Vlanlados! The Church of Kot will convene tonight, for readings from our holy new testament bible and sermons preached by our esteemed leader, Kot. Your attendance is mandatory. Our Divine Encouragement and Altruism for Team Health squads will help anyone who has trouble reaching the meeting. Thank you."

The day continues with fishing, construction of crab cages, and attempts to dry out poo next to a fire, [1d6:5] which goes better than expected, yielding a small amount of unpleasant but flammable material. Lacking any proper building or amphitheater to host five hundred colonists, Kot stands in front of a small makeshift pew (an empty oil drum, actually) with a small bible which was already on land when the Crabby Wench collapsed. Most of the pages are stuck together or otherwise illegible, because it was stored in the corner of a damp igloo, so he's mostly just pretending to read it and making stuff up. The colonists are in the process of cooking and eating their dinners, and pay half attention as they stand in line or pick apart krill. "It is written that on the sixth day, god made a sail boat," he paused and flipped several pages, "so that the Jews could flee from persecution. ...but it hit an iceberg! And the Romans... no, the Jews, they were woeful! But God made fish rain from the heavens, and they were happy!" The colonists don't seem very impressed, and the man who leads the Church of the Lost Colonists scoffs (but says nothing, as the Divine Encouragement squads are wielding rifles.)

[1d6:6] But even though it was not obvious yet, his words would carry far.

Another Storm

That night, there is a mighty storm- perhaps worse than the one which destroyed the ship the colonists came in on. [1d6:1] More than half of the igloos collapse. But, in the morning, there is a miracle: Laid out on the snow, right in front of the Kotzar's igloo, fully a hundred and fifty meters from the shore, is a blue whale! Just like in the sermon! It's a miracle, it's a blessing from God, it's definitely not just a freak weather anomaly (as criers from the Divine Encouragement squads repeat for fully an hour in the morning.) Immediately, led by the expert hunter (whales aren't strictly his field of expertise, but there's nobody else better for the job). More than a hundred men set about carving the whale and collecting its oil. In truth, they make a bit of a botch of it, but even so, over the course of the week they gather 20,000 ration's worth of smoked meat and blubber, and 20 barrels of oil. The food problem will be solved for months. Kot's pew is adorned with whale bones. For the common Vlanladosian, this (literal) windfall of food is a blessing from (literally) above, and Kot is the instrument and speaker of God's will. At every meal, they sit enraptured listening to Kot's sermons, now that his holiness has been proven by a life-saving miracle.

The looming veil of death by starvation has been lifted from New Vlanlados, but that's not to say all is well. After the storm there's not enough shelter for a few days, especially with many people preoccupied with carving the whale and the sick unable to work. Dozens of the ill colonists die, and dozens more fall ill. [1d6:1] The Church of the Lost hasn't given up their hold on the colonists either. Though he's been careful not to say it in front of the Church of Kot's leadership or their "Death squads" (a horrible slander on the good name of the armed Divine Encouragement and Altruism for Team Health squads), rumor has it that's he's accused Kot of having struck a faustian deal. "Witchcraft!" says one of the women running the stoves, stubbornly refusing to eat any whale meat and consuming kill instead. "There's no way God would speak through someone like him! No, he made a deal with someone else... a deal with the devil! And this blessing comes along with the deaths of all those people who froze overnight in the storm! That was the price he paid- blood!"

This time, the dead colonists are properly buried. With all the excitement of butchering the whale and replacing the igloos, and perhaps some of the Lost colonists are refusing to work as well, not much fishing gets done, although five crab traps are still made. The project to line the walls of the igloos with planks only gets as far as a couple of test igloos, they're better insulated and probably less likely to fall down in a storm but still don't resolve the discomfort of sleeping on snow. [1d6:2] The Church of Kot also resolves to strictly control the colony's supply of guns, which amounts to putting a door with a lock on the igloo in which they're stored. It's not serious protection though, someone could easily break into the igloo by smashing a wall down or tearing the door-frame out of the snow entirely.

[1d6:5] There's some more good news, as well: The expedition team sent to recover the excavator and tractor has somehow managed to get both working again, by shoveling out the excavator and using it to lift the tractor out of the water. They've managed to get both vehicles near the coal seam so work can be done, but they say they'll need more men, shelters, and food. On that last note, they're ecstatic to come back to the camp and find a surplus of food.

Spoiler: Population (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Property (click to show/hide)

It is Day 48

The food shortage is over! You're technically still consuming food faster than you're producing it, but it will be well into spring before that becomes a serious issue, with the stockpile of food you've built up. The coal shortage is becoming more pertinent, since a lot of coal was used up smoking meat, but at least you have a real hope of solving that issue now.

You're also going to want to do something about the Church of the Lost. Although the majority of the colony is now absolutely fanatical about Kot, there's no telling what damage the other church might cause. In fact, it's not even clear how many of the colonists are loyal to them.

Shelter is an issue as well. Clearly the igloos, as they're being constructed now, aren't going to be reliable in the long term, and besides colonists complain that they're damp, crowded and cold. Once the immediate needs of colonists such as food are met, comforts like this are going to be a big issue.

You're also going to want to do something about the Church of the Lost.
Gather them up and have them shot, or at least kill the pastor.

Also I think we should try do that plan that involved building cabins and burying them.

This is a great plan, and a way to lessen the burden on the DEATH squads/whatever Inquisition we're going to inevitably set up.

Urgent things now: get more coal. I don't want to burn wood if we can help it, since it's also useful as a building material. We'll need to send out an expedition to the coal mining seam to get the excavator working, but we're short on tents, which can only hold 18 people. We can send people out in coats as well to sleep on snow, and rotate who's sleeping inside and outside on the journey. Once they get there, they can start making igloos at the seam for more permanent shelter.

Shelter: I still think we should mine out more pit-igloos, because those aren't vulnerable to these stupid storms. We can also continue the wooden-lining project.

Morale: returning to full rations should boost spirits a bit, along with improving the igloos. It's only a stopgap though, we'll have to do something about the COTL before long. Still against just shooting them, because that only makes them martyrs. It's time to give the Church of Kot a proper building, preferably one made out of the whale bones for extra moral authority. Also, are some of the Lost refusing to work? That is the one thing that should be a capital crime, because we're in freakin' Antarctica, and if they're not working they're just mooching off the labor of others.

You burned all of it, but reduced the rate of coal expenditure. You will notice that the amount of weeks it would last is more per the amount of coal you have compared to before.

Whalebone: the wood of the arctic
Lets build large tent frames out of it. When we have seal leather we can cover them and snow coat them for the best purely antarctic material shelter money can buy.

We should make seal hunting a semi-high priority again, maybe even send out a very small expedition to recover the stashed skins from previous expeditions.

If the coal expedition proves successful, we may be able to pull back the excavator for building duties.
edit: also, if the tractor is free, we can use it and its sled to support hunting trips. We can start bringing back whole seals, and use their skins and bones.

The Chapel of Kot

The Church of Kot names Monday, the day of the Whale, as their sabbath. A Chapel of Kot is constructed from the whale's enormous carcass where it stands. [1d6:5] After being fully scraped of flesh, the ribs and skull are shored up with wooden planks, with small gaps for light. There's enough room for maybe two hundred colonists when it's really packed, which means that by holding a morning and an evening service, Kot (or his trusted Kope) can preach to most of the colonists. It's a surprisingly good space for the activity too, considering that it's a corpse. The gaps in the structure make an unearthly hum when the wind blows just the right way, and sound carries reasonably well through the chapel.

A Konfessional is constructed as well, using more wood and the some fabric from mattresses for curtains. Colonists are encouraged in to confess (konfess?) in one of Kot's first speeches in the new chapel. "Repent, and then turn to Kot... confess your sins to each other, especially Kot, and pray for... sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. I mean, pray to get rid of those things. Except lewdness is alright some times. But you have to tell Kot about it." He goes on to explain that dissatisfaction with the colony itself was a sin which must be confessed, which didn't have to intended effect of getting people to stop being dissatisfied with the colony so much but did at least provide a good survey of the colonists' desires.

Living in Antarctica

Now that the food shortage is over, and has been over for almost a week, the colonists are beginning to think of how to better their lives. The simple truth is that the immediate crisis of survival has been the only thing distracting them from the fact that life in New Vlanlados is pretty miserable. When Katzar Ovechkin promised them a new home, a New Vlanlados, people pictured it like their old home. There would be hard work making it, sure, but also proper homes, industry, produce and textiles, and vitally, a link to the outside world, so goods could be exported and imported.

Right now, people are getting awfully sick of eating krill, sick of living in igloos, sick of bearing the cold in their old clothes, and in some cases, literally sick. This lack of amenities is all on top of the fact that the land is even more inhospitable than Vlanlados and it's difficult to get much done in the short days, but of course there's less to be done about that. What's more, the Vlanladosian dream of industrialization seems so far away, now that Ovechkin's manufacturing equipment has sunk beneath the waves, probably being irreparably damaged. Lastly, nobody outside of New Vlanlados even knows where New Vlanlados is. The Vlan people living in Cannala have heard no word of their traveling countrymen, and neither has anyone who could trade precious goods.

The most immediate work being done in this regard is on improved igloos. A few wooden huts, complete with floors, are built and covered in snow. [1d6:4] These are cramped, but much drier inside than igloos. With cast iron stoves, they make a much better place for preparing food than the outdoors as well, so some of the stoves which were outside are moved into huts for this purpose. A few permanent tent frames are made by lashing together the smaller rib bones from the end of the whale's tail, but there's no canvas. When the seal hunting was going on, the hunters strictly prioritized meat over skins because the colony was starving. Between this and the chapel, most of the whale bones are in use, there's only a little bones left to make tools or whatever. A few more pit-igloos are made as well. [1d6:2] It's slow going, and attempts to make a properly smooth floor from the shale bedrock aren't very successful, it's dreadfully slow work and the shale can unpredictably break off in large chunks. It is at least learned that digging a small channel around the edges keeps water out of most of the igloo. Sleeping on the stone floor isn't seen as very desirable, though.

So far, the huts seem to be the most successful form of shelter, but wood is getting used up somewhat quickly, especially with the construction of the chapel. It might be wise to find a more readily available material.

For the last of the work at the colony site, one of the pit-igloos is designated as weapons storage. All eighty rifles are to be kept there under guard when not in use by Divine Encouragement and Altruism for Team Health squads.

Coal Mining

56 men, about half as many coats, and maybe a third as many tents, are sent to the coal mining site. They're given food for two weeks, and orders to mine as much coal as possible before returning. You won't hear about their progress until they send a messenger next week. Hopefully that goes well, because you're almost out of coal.

Spoiler: Population (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Property (click to show/hide)

It is Day 54

Nearly two months have passed since the Exodus. Aside from a shortage of coal for heating and cooking (and in an emergency, wood can be burned) the colony is finally stable, no immediate crisis threatens your survival. There is enough food, enough shelter, and much more colonists have recovered from sickness than fallen ill. However, the colonists are not happy with their living conditions. Small strides were made with the construction of wooden huts, at least, and religious fanaticism is keeping the colonists in line... for now. Still, rumors of the Church of the Lost persist. "Father Potemkin says if he were in charge, we would be living in stone houses by now, like the olds days," says one colonist at Konfession. It's clear that if you wish to keep hold of the colonists' hearts and minds, you'll need to improve their quality of life. Or maybe just be really forceful.

Besides wood, another material in short supply to make useful goods is leather. You may want to prioritize keeping skins if you spot seals to hunt again. Right now, fishing is going steady and providing about half of your food. At this rate, you've got food for about five months.

I have an Idea for some shelter but I'm not sure we have the means to make it a reality, the idea is to take the wrecked steam-turbine and the wrecked boiler and pull them apart and build housing from the pieces and then bury the houses like the wooden huts.

Still, rumors of the Church of the Lost persist.
Also can we do something about the guy in charge of these Church of the Lost people, we could shoot him in his face or we could make it look like an accident, ether way I think leaving him alive for much longer is going to screw us over somehow.

They commited suicide by walking outside during the night naked with huge holes from lead tipped icicles.

We need to enter full scavenger mode and collect any scrap of usable resource we can.
Crab shells, there's gotta be some use for these.
Blue whale baleen, there's gotta be some use for it.
Fish leather, if we can catch big fish we might be able to make a shitty leather like chicken leather.
Blue whale penis leather, an actual high quality leather, about enough for 1 full outfit.
