Nope, he is in fact a poet who is also a vampire.

Recommend locking him in a room so he doesn't eat your populace in between verses.

I thought vampires were supposed to be concealed, though.
I just had him killed

Did you note how good he was at poetry?  If it was Vogon-level quality, then even without tye biting critique he could have gone from bard to verse.

That also is a good solution.

Historical Figures who are also vampires are generally open about it. I'm not sure if it's planned exactly, but it is the way it works right now. You can even find examples on the forums where a town will defend the open bloodsucker in their midst.

Visitors are announced as vampires in the announcements (which is probably a bug), but nowhere else (they were using their real name when petitioning, but I think that's been fixed). Migrant vampires as well as merchant/diplomat once are still under full cover.

Since we currently have no way to restrict visitors from roaming freely in the fortress, I'd prefer to have the vampire announcement until that's been addressed. Once you're able to declare parts of the fortress as off limits and have guards that actually intercept trespassers, and, ideally, triggers that actually trigger on visitors, vampire visitors ought to announced as their cover.

Assuming you're using the latest DF serie ( 44.xx )
A possibility is that since npc can now assume false identity , this human is assuming a vampire identity but is not really one.

Now if it's really a vampire, then it's a bug that was fixed in 42.04 :

But that came back (so you should upload the save on the bug tracker on a new report so Toady may notice).

"Vampire" isn't a visitor type profession so it's not part of that bug.
This is just a case of a bug which needs reopening and hasn't been yet (it's still a bug even if some people think it shouldn't be fixed yet. Better Toady knows about it than assumes it's fixed).

I think it's just a worldgen hiccup of some sort anyway. I've never actually seen any of these transspecies spies appear in-game before, only in legends.

Toady needs to implement animals dressing up like humans or elves in fortress and adv mode.  Bonus if he tongue-in-cheek establishes that this is where animal people come from. (giggle)

I have this mental picture of a bunch of cats in a long robe, asking for a tall glass of cream.

@Robsoie: As Shonai_Dweller said, you're referencing the wrong bug fix. If you look at the report you referenced, you'll see that it refers to one that's still open (http://bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=9719), which is the one in operation here.

Can we have transpecies animal covers an actual feature? That would be the best
