"We should move, but away from the site of that strange purple glow. I cannot get this spear out; the crocodile is infected with a similar...infestation, but without the purpleness. The marrow is purple, the innards are filled with fungus. I would advise to devise masks or other kinds of filters for impurities in the air at this point, alongside covering all areas of skin. How many oil-tight suits do we have again?

"Anyway, we can only attain this spear if one is willing to hack the crocodile to pieces. It is interesting to note that anyone with medical training can see how this strange organism proceeds when with a living host. I do hope the same is not to be said of me."

Proceed to nearest area by Pathfinder! Also sample collection time!
(Samples of the croc, the spear, or both?)

As you're about to head out, the Cartographer suddenly stops you. He checks his map, the position of the sun, and then mutters to himself before pointing at the map.

"I think we've gone off track.  I think we're on 0302 instead."

(also, since our cartographer just fucked off, someone else might want to take over his part of telling me what you want on the map and where otherwise its just gonna stay as woods. )

"Let's move more to the east please, survey a thorough perimeter, and get out. That or I'll be going deeper to find a solution to whatever ails me. It is annoying."

Suggest going to  0402. Also collect samples.

"And I think you're loony. No way we're that far off track.
For one, we're not in the mountains any longer. The folks who made this map didn't know what was on the other side of the ridge, but they did seem to know how far the ridge goes. We would be at 0302 if we mixed up east with northeast, but in that case what we saw from what was supposed to be 0304 wouldn't make sense. Flat swamp northeast, flay mudplain due east, mountains southeast. If we were at 0303 and thought that northeast was east, then we'd have seen mountains northeast and due east, and something flat southeast. There's no way we could have gotten to 0302 while trying to travel due east without having passed through 0303 while thinking that the northeast was east, so I conclude that you're a loony who cannot read a map. And that I need a new cartographer."

...All remaining choices have 4 knowledge. Hmm. I'll make Ana the cartographer, and Ignis the observer, then.

Get our bearings. Observe the mountain ridge to the east. It should run pretty much due north to due south. We have a compass, use that. Tell us what the terrain is in all six directions, that should eliminate doubt.

Collected! Being infected has the nice side effect of being immune to further infection.

According to the compass and what you can see, the mountains seem to run north to south, but they drift east as they do. You do a quick check around and find that  North West, West, and South West are all mountains while South east is a mudplain, east is a lake, and north east is more bog.

Mark on the map:
302 as bog or whatever it is we are standing in. (mudplain?)
301, 202, 303 as mountain
403 mudplain
402 lake
401 bog

Please put a white outline around, or a dot toward the top of, each of these map tiles, to indicate that we have visually confirmed them to be that.

I'm pretty sure we're at 0403, actually.

possible. if so, the map will be northwest-shifted by one hex.

perhaps we should have started the game with a reliable cartographer, or addressed the concern the first time the cartographer failed to mark the map (aka, round one).

((It looks like he drew a bunch of little pictures, arranged them in a hexgrid, put a filter over them, put a different filter on a compass image and then dropped that on top, and finally had a program write the game's title in a circle around the compass, using a tarnished font.

...Why is everyone looking at me like that?))
