Thrane's forces, lead into combat by the kappa, meet the enemy in the one-sided Battle of the Open Field. The ferocity of the imperial warriors is unmatched, and few enemy troops escape.

Despite his near total victory, Thrane decides that launching a counter-attack against the town of Applegate would just drag other former confederate towns into the war, and accept's the enemy town master's offer of the aggressor's entire fortune in exchange for peace. Historians eventually come to know this brief conflict as The War of Ill Tidings, as the victorious party still lost their great leader.
