Selective Breeding
« on: January 24, 2018, 07:00:42 pm »

Obviously another animals-orientated post by none other than yours truly...

As the title says, Selective Breeding.
This would mean that two parents with the ability to attain high Strength produces off-spring (majority of the time) with the same capabilities & then some (attributes, or traits), allowing for generations to mean something.
Similarly, this could be used in tandem with countering inbreeding, with a little imagination, if so desired.
Or, it could just be something related to the colour/size/minor cosmetics.

If I had things my way...

This would open up a whole can of worms, from which you'd only grab the best worms and place them in their own can and atom smash the rest, but you'd quickly run out of worms and your worms would underperform cause their genes don't mean as much as you thought they would and it turns out they're really all just worms.

Or you could do it with dogs and it'd be great.

Dogs, giant grizzly bears, dragons... I'd totally do it with Giant worms if they were around, for the record :P

Isn't this already a thing? Like, I'm pretty sure I've been doing this for years and have observed modded races with unbalanced male:female ratios all get the same aesthetics from the genetic bottle-necking that occurs when somebody marries the only straight guy in town.

Ahem...

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Giant_earthworm

They can't burrow, unfortunately.
Yeah.. yeah! See?! 'N' I don't gave any on my map :P We're already Expert trainers of the obscure giant monarch butterflies & giant hamsters, trying to do the giant moths & mosquitos next, but have yet to ever see or catch the illusive Giant Eartworm :(

I don't think so, or it's underdeveloped. Stats seem to be purely randomized from what I can tell (I keep the top strength/toughness creatures alive, but have seen nothing to suggest their offspring Mao rain these attributes or traits)

Have you tried catching the worms underground? They live there.

I've also mastered the giant rats, moles 'n' large rats (the shortest life spans down there) but no worms. And my 3rd cavern layer is 100% devoid of life sadly.
