Should Dwarf Fortress have conversation logs in fortress mode?
« on: December 07, 2017, 06:47:56 pm »

just wanted to see if there was anything worth discussing on this topic. I know that conversations in games are inherently limited, but wouldn't it be great to be able to see dwarves show off their personality against others?

Honestly not a fan of this idea. It's already easy enough to examine a dwarf's personality by reading their descriptions and tracking the way they interact with their neighbours, and it would probably cause WAY more lag than I'm willing to put up with in my forts.

It's actually pretty terrifying to think about having all of your fat melt off into grease because you started sweating too much.

You can enable them yourselves by setting REGULAR_CONVERSATION to dwarf-mode announcements or mute adventure mode conversation (not sure if it requires a world reset, best to do so for good measure)

If it was self contained & optional then yes id be interested in a chatlog (though you can probably program a 3rd party tool to follow conversations anyways)

Doesn't need a world reset. It's just an announcements option (they're still talking without it, you just can't see them).

Would quite like to output just the conversation to a side monitor while playing fortress. Noticing a rumour scroll by of some legendary forgotten-beast leather pants being talked about is more fun than just searching the map for anything interesting.

Be warned that enabling conversations in the log also spams you with whatever the underground pops are chattering about even before you've discovered them.

I'd be okay with this if it was nested in announcements the same way combat logs are, where you expand them to see what's going on. They would probably be pretty damn repetitive at this stage of the game though.

Urist #1 "I saw a dog this morning."

Urist #2 "It was inevitable."

Prepare for oblivion dialogue.

Right now they're the same conversations as you hear in adventurer. Arguing values, rumours of beasts, missing kidnapped children, desiring human bone artifact morning stars. That kind of thing.

as some one stated it's usually demons that say this, but I can't confirm.

Doubtful. I'm pretty sure it's what you get when you select "Comment on weather" while in the HFS.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.
