guest at embark?
« on: December 07, 2017, 01:00:25 pm »

so ive just started my first fortress of 0.44.02 and right off the bat ive noticed something strange.
there is an elf bard standing next to my wagon.

on the units screen they are listed as guest/no activity.

they are just slowly meandering around the wagon not doing anything.

i had barely begun to even dig into the ground and chop trees when i noticed them, so theres no reason i can think of for them to be here already.

im guessing that this is due to the new features introduced in the update, and that this person is actually some sort of thief trying to pose as a bard.

is there any other explanation for this? is it a common occurrence?

Check his inventory, if he has weapons he's a spy yes. If not he'S proooobably safe.

Tho, you know that as a Dwarf it is your duty to end his life anyway no matter the reason of his being there.

Even if he's a spy it's no immediate danger to you. And don't go around murdering elves for no reason, that's a shitty meme with no basing in the game.

Fairly easy to dig a 3x3 room with retracting bridge, that is 5z deep full of cage traps.
When they fall and get stunned, they get trapped.  Now you have visitor zoo.

All types of visitors are turning up too early regardless of whether they're spies or not. Monster Slayers will petition right away (that indicates that it's not a spy). There are large groups of artifact hunters too (also armed, of course).

He certainly is a dwarf in an elf's body, who longs to join the ranks of other dwarves. Such things happen. There is a race correction surgery which can help him. It starts with height adjustment. It's not a murder.

That's your opinion until you have established proper trade relations with them and realize that they constantly want to run off the map with your artefacts while forcing you not to cut down trees
whihle occationally sneaking around your fort unseen, spotted several of those mayhem causers. :P

You spotted a guest taking an artifact (not a book) and trying to walk off the map with it?
That's very interesting, not at all how Toady described the mechanic (spying, then leaving to report and later coming back as a thief squad or with an army).

Well so far they asked for it first. But not specifically. They say they are here for some heroic deed to claim a object and if you agree to help them they noodle off with one of your artefacts.

A few versions back I embarked and immediately saw a random bard on the other side of the map. He was listed as a visitor and just hung around the wagon after that, he never left.

That was before spies so I figure I just happened to embark on the bard while he was travelling to another site. Maybe the same happened to you?

I've accidentally trapped wandering people by building an adventurer site on top of them before. One of them, somewhat unnervingly, informed me that he'd been stalking my site for decades (a couple of days after I'd founded it...).

its not a meme tho...i mean the elves in the game are huge dicks and the community dislikes them because of that..and the elves versus dwarves thing is literally one of the founding blocks of fantasy media as a whole. not to mention the fact that elves vs dwarves continues the age old narrative of nature vs technology, pragmatism vs idealism, jews vs nazies and so on and so on.

Too many words. Just stab the elf.
