What happened to my visitor cap?
« on: December 02, 2017, 04:29:42 am »

I have my visitor cap set to 16 in my current fort, to save FPS.

however, after I openend my first tavern about a season ago, 114 guests have already streamed in. The good news is, my FPS is still at max (70), but then there isn't anywhere to path to for the visitors except their 7x7 inn.
WTF. Send halp

If you're on 0.44.0X there are multiple reports of spies (at least) ignoring the visitor cap, as well as reports of visitors (both legitimate and spies, it seems) arriving before you get any visitable facilities up. You can probably find those on the bug tracker. If not, make a report yourself (I won't, because I haven't seen it first hand).

All 114 visitors are either human or dwarf military. They are all in the fortress to 'seek information about a location'.
I put it on Mantis already, didn't see anything resembling it.

EDIT: not sure if they are asking about physical locations, or about locations of books and artefacts. I think the latter, unless 'The Limb of Choking' is an evil plains or forest region somewhere.

EDIT2: will they leave eventually? I was wrong about them not hurting my FPS, I must have looked at it paused. They take my fort down from 70 to 45 FPS. Damnit, it's just spring year 2, with only 20 dwarves. My poor FPS.

EDIT3: Heh, some of them are carrying books. Why do military carry books?

More EDIT: Gods, they keep on coming. I'm at 145 visitors now. If the trend continues, I'll be at FPS death before year 5 :(

Thanks for posting the bug.

I would expect them to be supposed to leave eventually (if for no other reason than to report back), but ordinary visitors can stay for years...

You should be able to kill them (which is not something I do unless they're vampires or weres). If so, I'd steal their weapons first, though.

Getting rid of them peacefully probably requires DFHack, and I would guess it's a race between Toady fixing the visitor spam bug and DFHack becoming available.

Books: I had some goblin siegers carrying books in 0.43.05, so yes, it's possible for military to carry books. As to why? Don't know. Career changed from researcher to military? Something to read during these long boring sieges?

Same problem here. 48 visitors in all of 10 seconds. Note: I'm pretty sure i'm the only dwarven site left. This fort is just to build up manpower for the civ.

Also, if you ever figure out why poets/bards/dancers just randomly start butchering people/getting butchered, please don't fix it, I love never knowing when a dance party will turn into a slaughter.

Same issue. I don't have a tavern but they come anyway, looking about artifact info. Humans and Dwarfs.

Some are carrying books and other artifacts themselves. They do not leave and don't need a location, they just hang around the wagon. Some go insane after a few years and start vandalizing stuff and punching random people so I gave in and built them a tavern. I got a notification that one of my tame duck animals that I hadn't penned yet disclosed information about an artifact to one of them (weird bug).

Anyway, they're now strategically situated near the fortress entrance, and goblin besiegers usually kill like 30-40 of them per year, leaving me with lots of iron, steel, books and artifacts.

Now the entrance is so full with corpses that each arrival gets 3 screens of death trauma messages in his thoughts and I also had traders self destruct their wagons and flee from the scene.

Time to clean it up.

I hope it gets fixed soon. It stops me from playing DF for now. The fort from my original post dropped below 15 FPS with 280 visitors. Had to put that on ice, can't build a fort at 15 FPS with 20 dwarves.
Tried making a new fort, same problem.

I categorized it as 'major' on Mantis, but should have categorized it as 'game-breaking'

Oooh. Good idea! I was annoyed by them endlessly clogging up my meeting area, but if they got killed by the next werebeast or cyclops that came through...
(I have had three cyclops, five werebeasts and an ettin so far, I have no idea why)

I finally had enough.  I built my first ever drowning room and defined it as the tavern.  I've had it with these people.

I did something similar: I built a platform jutting out from a waterfall, then set it as a tavern. It was hilarious watching everyone rush to their watery doom. That said, it also proved quite good at killing my dwarves. But I was using the fort for testing purposes anyhow.

The secret is using burrows to get your civilians out before the water starts pouring in.  That being said, if in real life you are ever in someone else's town and all the locals start leaving - GO QUICKLY.  :D

What, visitors don't produce ghosts when unslabbed?
