Can we designate an engraving?

I guess I just noticed there was a detail option after designating smooth stone for engraving.  Is this option used to designate a specific engraving?  If so, how?

First, designate an engraving. Before exiting the designation menu or moving your cursor, press 'D' and you will access the menu letting you specify which engraving you would like. You have options for preexisting images, creating your own image, or letting the artist decide.

That's what I thought I did, and I couldn't get it to work.  I pressed D and then chose a place and picked my fort name.  After hitting enter on the fort name, there is no indication it was selected and something else was engraved there instead.

OK, I think I figured things out.  I had smoothed a boulder at the beginning of my fort creation and chose the fort from the list of sites for the engraving.  Since there hasn't been any notable history yet, it chose to use the fort's leader as the subject of the engraving.  So evidently, even choosing a detailed focus for the engraving still leaves a measure of latitude for subject material.  That's pretty cool.
