Well, the fortifications don't need to be light, and bars/blocks are lighter than barrels besides - you can even skip the smelting step and cut ore right off the bat. Or, if you want to train smithing, convert the already extant bars into blocks.

Ultimately, even if you already have twenty times as much dwarves as OP and have things moved relatively close, it still lengthens the time every job takes if dwarves slow down to a crawl moving the ingredients, which means effectively a skill penalty on every job that repeatedly carries bin or barrel.

Besides it being bit of a PITA to fix, mine rock → craft rock pot is inherently quicker production chain than Mine rock → smelt into bars → craft metal barrel or pot.

Except that the smelting runs constantly thanks to the wonders of magma and minecart quantum stockpiles. Bins only really get moved for trading, and that's only twice a year.
I don't trade with elves, because their pack animals are worth more than the junk they bring. I just drown the lot of them in the trade depot, butcher the pack animals, and sell the wooden junk on.

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I like to give the Elves lots of cheap to produce high quality stuff (bone crafts, green glass trap components, copper/lead goblets etc, depending on which dwarf has a mood first), and they bring shitloads of high value exotic animals back to me, not to mention the food (brewing exotic booze is good for morale) and the occasional clothing.

That being said, lavish meals made of war unicorn meat are also good.

@Skorpion: Ok, I figured you had been using bins to store metal bars and ammo and everything else like that.

Tho, hang on - if you only make bins to store clothes for trading and use qsps otherwise, why put it on repeat? To just trade the empty bins?

I don't trade the bins, though. Just the contents. And I need lots of bins for the sheer amount of crap my forts produce just to keep everyone busy, or because I get too distracted with some megaproject or other to actually micromanage sock production and just leave it on repeat for a few years at a time.

Ah, has the bug where the elves would bring shittons of bins of cloth as their highest value trade good been fixed, then?
