I'm going to guess that our civilisation is being killed off, and some battle took out the previous Baron of Toplabors and Monarch, the latter leaving no heirs. Thematically, of course, I'd say that a couple demons made it over from across the sea and are rampaging, but you should check Legends so we can see what actually happened.

Still, it's surprising that one of our citizens was picked for new King. Could be sheer luck, but it would be less surprising if, say, everyone else is already dead...
