Smallworld Dwarfopoly - The Bloodlines
« on: September 15, 2017, 07:55:57 am »

This part of the Smallworld Dwarfopoly game.  "The Bloodlines" mini-game charts the emergence of whole lineages of dwarves from one civilization: The City builders of Tun Kab.  Vanilla DF has no rhyme nor reason when it comes to naming its dwarves, making the following of lineages very difficult.  So I will be using the following rules to simplify and clarify who is related to whom over the course of the emerging history.  I'm putting this in a separate thread so as not to cause as much confusion.

Rules for individual names:

Rules for Clan names:

So, if I understand your rules correctly, I can choose one of these to sponsor for added prestige, yes? If so, I'd like to sponsor Clan Dentedglazed. I like winners. :P

Rules for individual names:
Unmarried female dwarves: add "i" to the end of their first name.  Example: "Aden" becomes "Adeni"
Unmarried male dwarves: add "o" to the end of their first name: Example: "Aden" becomes "Adeno"
Married female dwarves: add "a" to the end of their name: Example: "Adeni" becomes "Adenia"
Married male dwarves: remove the "o" from the end of the name: Example: "Adeno" becomes "Aden"

If two single dwarves happen to occur at the same embark with the same first names, a look into both their descriptions will be used to find an appropriate difference and added to each's name using a hyphen.
Example: Two dwarves named "Adilo" might become "Little-Adilo" and "Big-Adilo".
However, if a migrant happens to come to the Fortress who has the same name as a current member, only the migrant or the current member will receive the hyphen treatment.

I like the ending of vowels manipulations.  And since I am using Dwarf Therapist to review founders and migrants, I can also tweak the naming based on hetero and non-hetero.  So here's my version I plan to update my test Bloodline game.

Single Hetero Female, add “i” to the end.  Aden> Adeni.
Single Hetero Male, add “o” to the end. Aden > Adeno.
Single Non-Hetero Female, add “u” to the end.  Aden > Adenu.
Single Non-Hetero Male, add “e” to the end. Aden > Adene.
Married Female, add “a” to the end.  Adeni > Adenia.
Married Male, remove “o” or “e” at the end.  Adeno / Adene > Aden.

And since names duplicate, I have a list of 3 and 4 letter base first names in an spreadsheet that I bold when I use it.

For last names, I am working on finding a pattern.  It's a compound word with the first word related to possible mood.
Second name is free form either from likes, preference, or from original name.

If a dwarf has can be trained to a mood-able skills, and likes weapons, last name start with that: Axe, Sword, Spear, Hammer, Mace, Bow (for crossbow).
For liking armors: Plate (breastplate, Greave, Mail (for mail shirt), Helm.  I do not encourage mooding towards a single gauntlet or boot.

I have a generic "Builder" dwarf that gets the labors: Mining, Mason, Mechanic, Engraving, Architect, and Stone Crafting.
If a dwarf likes Picks, lastname begins with "Pick".
If it's a moodable mason item, last name begins with "Stone"
If it's a mechanism or traction bench, last name begins with "Mech"

Beds are the only wood item I am interested in for artifact, so for those dwarfs that likes Beds and is capable of training to be  a carpenter, lastname starts with "Bed".

Anyway, playing 1 year forts do not seem to get someone to go in a mood, so I do not have much test data if I'm to renamed someone who mooded a random artifact.

Interesting naming system - I was thinking about shortening the surnames to one word designations instead of the two words compound ones we have right now, with hyphenated names going to noble families that intermarry, but decided against that because after three or four generations, we'd have the possibility of three to four word hyphenated names.  (Which is why I went with the "higher prestige" system instead.)

I particularly like the non-hetero naming system - it allows those dwarves a special identity that isn't just an addition to the hetero system, which is more just than mine.  I may add that to my naming system.  Perhaps the non-hetero pairings will become the new priest/ess class of noble and become holy dwarves who have sworn off children in the name of a higher calling.  (Not celibate, just never producing offspring.  They'd be taken off all hauling duties and inducted to "perform" in temples of their faith only: like the Quariwarmi shamans of the Inca)

Edit:
I've added "The Clergy" to the list of Prestige classes, and I'm excited to see what will happen now.  Thanks for the idea seed, Sanctume!  I was hoping to get a priesthood going in this game, and your distinction has certainly been helpful.
