You have voted to interview the colleagues of the subject (Sark Rayburg) and keep recordings of the proceeds.

Spoiler: Dice (click to show/hide)

During the interrogation, the following facts are found:

  • Rayburg was brought into the project relatively late, in order to do surgeries on the bionic dogs. By then it had already been realized that previous treatments had given them free will.
  • He’s forgotten to use proper sanitation several times and got ejected from surgeries as a result
  • Every Friday he drinks at a particular bar in the city
  • Language in the newspaper articles indicates that a surgeon wrote the details; only five surgeons would have known that level of detail, and Sark is one of them.
  • Nobody in the research team associated closely with Sark; he was an unknown to most of them
  • One who did speak with him on more than one occassion states that he was interested in but critical of Erin Quill’s theories regarding sentience
  • The photos of the surgeries which made it to the police were in a records folder that Rayburg kept. He reported them stolen the day before they were released
Rayburg is now accusing us of wrongly imprisoning him. He demands to be released and threatens to sue us.

(I realized the truth drug would be the most effective method of questioning, but the frog’s in Brazil and Erin didn’t take any samples to Antarctica, lest they fall into the wrong hands.)

You can now choose to let him go or keep questioning him. If you keep him and he turns out to be innocent, the court case results in a -2 to the next 5 rolls you have.

I don't rember what we are accusing him off, but I think we should investigate that bar further. Y'know some of the patrons there might have known him.

Leaking the information. Read the thread.

Ah okay, we still don't have definite evidence for that as far as I've seen all we can say with certainty is that he had a lot of information that he could have leaked.

I say we question him about the photos that got released as that seems the most fishy.

"let him go" But make him sign a bunch of stupid and useless papers to register what has been done here

And meanwhile we investigate his work place and make a list of his acquaintances (say that the orders were made before we let him go, don't investigate the house right now because I don't think we can make him lose enough time to search there, unless we know we can do that safely)

Again, tiebreak time. Unless you're fine with me combining both your suggestions?

"Okay, we will let you go, but first can you answer some questions so we can maybe find the leakage source? I wanna talk first about these photos, and now sign these papers, no, we are totally not gaining time"

A day has passed. CDQ: 15%. This means that your debuff will decrease to a d5.

"Okay, we will let you go, but first can you answer some questions so we can maybe find the leakage source? I wanna talk first about these photos, and now sign these papers, no, we are totally not gaining time"

SARK RAYBURG: I’ll be going now.

INTERROGATOR: Please answer just one more question. Do you know anything else about those photos?

SARK RAYBURG: I already told you all I know - they were in my desk on Thursday the 27th and they weren’t when I reported to work at 9:00 the next day. They were in a drawer that wasn’t locked, and I rarely lock the door. I go home rather late and nobody else knew they were there.

INTERROGATOR: Alright. Please sign this form explaining that you don’t want to answer any other questions.

RAYBURG: I’m not signing everything.

INTERROGATOR: Sign this form explaining that you don’t want to sign anything.

RAYBURG: Are you trying to delay me?

INTERROGATOR: Now sign this form with the dates and times of your interview.

RAYBURG: Alright, but as I’ve said, I did nothing wrong.

INTERROGATOR: Sign this form explaining that the interview found nothing.

RAYBURG: I’ll sue you for this!

INTERROGATOR: Sign this form noting that your arrest was in error.

RAYBURG: Alright. Can I go now?

INTERROGATOR: Get your lawyer. Then sign this form for us to cover your legal expenses. Then have your lawyer sign all the previous forms.

(etc.)

While this is happening we search his workplace.

His story actually checks out. His office is unlocked, and people around it confirm that it is unlocked most of the time. The cabinet with the folder does not have a lock. The folder is still inside and some pictures are still there. The floor is white linoleum and has been cleaned since then, so there’s no chance of footprints.

There’s no fingerprint evidence because by the time Rayburg reported that the photos were missing, the office had already been cleaned, including a wipe of all the cabinets. This is normal for a Friday.

All in all, nothing from the office.

The list of acquaintances will be rolled.

Spoiler: Dice (click to show/hide)

As the intelligence agency goes about collecting information on everyone Sark Rayburg is familiar with, one name and address stands out to one of the agents.

Several minutes later, the agent’s suspicions are confirmed. Walter “Bob” Conhan, who is a friend of Sark’s who frequents the same bars and casinos, is in a relationship with Zia DeMarco, the mother of Armen DeMarco, who betrayed the Republic because her brother was made into a Cherub.

The agent had worked on both cases and noticed that Conhan and DeMarco’s addresses were the same. She felt that it was too much of a coincidence that two people suspected of possessing classified information are related so closely.

What now?

Put our guy in observation but "let him go"

And investigate the new guy, routines, workplace, previous records in justice, relationship between this new guy and rebels parents, I don't think the blackmailer has contact with the rebels so directly, nor i think he is an ally, but...

Can we record the telephones? Intercept calls and this stuff?

To be specific: For the tech level of the Republic, assume "19th century engineering, late 20th century electronics". So we're still running off steam and trains and coal and stuff, but telegrams are getting replaced with telephones, important records can occasionally be digitized, central energy grid exists, semiconductor science beginning, etc.

So sort of like India in the 1920's or something like that.

We met him way back in October and the Intermissions. He’s Armen’s stepfather. See, Mr. DeMarco died 11 years ago, when Armen was still a toddler. Zia DeMarco married Conhan a year and a half ago. As far as we can tell their relationship is not anything close to happy and they're on the verge of breaking up.

Around 8:30 AM, he talks with another man in the front yard. With some clever use of acoustics we hear what he said:

Going to get the goods. If I don't come back you just do your part.

The other man just laughs and says he will.

By the way, the blackmail money has been sitting there for around 20 hours now.

What do you do?

Monitor him on the distance, see if he is going to the blackmailer money part, don't follow him when he get near the place where we put the money (as he probably put something to notice us there) but watch him when he is going back

If we really found the blackmailer, we will later need to know everyone that is his friend and is in his "business" and imprison everyone at once in one night
