If that's the case, encourage backstabbing and throne reclaiming. Add a 1 in 8 chance of spire claiming success to be doubled on a given turn! Killing another Wambler (when not in spire) gives 1 spire exclusive essence! Also, if the killed also had spire-exclusive essence, the killer takes one of them, too! Hide special Relics in that ruins and other places that give players special effects! A pot of concentrated essence that gives the holder 1 essence per turn until it empties! A cursed necklace guaranteed to have a bad effect, to put on another Wambler! A mere wand of fireball! The recipe for a potion of regeneration, a well kept secret! A map to a necromancer's treasure!

These are just examples, by the way.

I was seriously considering disposal of our current king for being too weak and indecisive, but it felt like my only real option for regicide was "bumrush him for six turns and assume nobody else will have the stones to do the same to me." I don't think you gave the wamblers enough (explicit) options to make it anything but "wamblers faff about, bottleneck for essence expenditure also faffs about."

A lot of people dodged this and did stuff anyway, but at that point the stated purpose of the game (essence!) isn't really coming into play, which is wonky in its own right.

I was actually playing the long game. First turn, I did something silly ("hand grenades") to appear nonthreatening, to possibly cause chaos and to earn the GM's brownie points. Second turn, I made a move that leaves the others starving while I don't need to worry about it for a while. This turn would have been the first move of a two-step plan to keep distracting others from finding something to eat.

I was also planning to take the Spire after my first death, but I kept rolling remarkably well.
