I'm just that fast.
But yeah. Because I haven't given a brief yet-
Ditch the magazine, switch lever to winch, put steroids in the bow.
Use it for nailing officers in the chest.

It'll only kill one in ten men, but it only needs to.
We can't half-ass a suppressing weapon when they have swords and we do not.

Edit: Ninja, and also basic crossbows were literally "hook with your fingers and pull"
Levers were for poncy nobles and those who understood fulcrums.

I know i'm a bit on the late side for the age-of-sail thing that happened earlier, but I would like to point out that a frigate would be medium-large depending on rating and functionally used as a heavy destroyer or a cruiser while ships of the line were battleships and large-very large.

As it stands on the crossbow business, though a fairly problematic result it will give us an extra shooter in the volley for relatively low cost, it needs improvements to be useful all round but those can be made without making it a bog-standard crossbow. Or at least make a bog-standard crossbow that is worth its cost.

(I am basing bog-standard on late Italian stuff)

Winch based bows were really, really slow. Our guns would out perform it.

Sure, I'll switch over to a better lever and stronger bow. Worst case, it becomes too hard to draw in automatic mode, and we still have a better single-shot crossbow (albeit not as good as a dedicated one)

Well, no. Since you can't fire our guns more than a few times. That's the benefit of a crossbow- it is reliable.

Yes, Jilla, it keeps the lever.

The thing is that our issues are as follows:
1. Accuracy. The crossbow is HIDEOUSLY inaccurate, as the lever reload requires you to aim AND haul back on a lever at the same time, which is hard.
2. Power. Almost unavoidable, a repeating crossbow must have a low draw weight in order to be loaded easy enough to work as a fast-firing weapon.
3. Both hands? This is not an issue, crossbows are generally meant to be used in both hands except for some niche applications of one-handed crossbows.

Fixing these isn't terribly difficult.

Tack, We have swords too. You have the sword sheathed at your waste and half the squad fires while the other moves up, problem solved. We get an option for this in the "tactics" section.

And no, most crossbows do NOT have assisted draws. The first crossbows had higher draw weights than bows, but were still manageable by hand. The higher draw weight was allowed for by the fact that you only had to pull it into place, not hold it there.
LATER crossbows got winches or a string-puller to help the soldier, but they were only developed as plate armor improved. The winched crossbows had draw weights of up to a thousand pounds and could put a bolt through armor, man, and horse at long range. They were basically used for sniping. We are not contending with advanced armor, nor do we need to worry too much about relying on assisted loading.

Uhmm, the ripper is the same as a better bow and lever, just with extra fuss about adding a trigger that already exists and removing the magazine that is already removable.

That may be, but it has an actual description for how we're improving the bow, rather than just saying 'make it better'... Might not actually matter in the end, but it does for me...

Thank you Khan. I'll endeavor to remember this.

Quote from: Improved bow and lever
By moving the lever pivot point lower in the stock and making it longer we greatly improve the mechanical advantage it provides. This greater advantage allows the bow to be stiffened with a more laminate layers and still be comfortably drawn.

How's that?

We could also improve the wooden composite we're using, perhaps instead of bronze backing? I mean, adding bronze backing shouldn't increase the ore cost, but if the cost is gonna rise due to this, I'd rather it was the wood cost rising.
Though my vote remains either way.

Hmmm, well it should work... Bronze would give a better effect, but you have a point about cost. I'll edit the revision.

Fix'd.

Edit: Additional proposal for year 3- some kind of improved dinghy or anti-dinghy weapon.
If we're locked in on which spire we're going for, we should capitalise on the unique features of said spire.

Once again, Milo, I want a simplified version that does not have a fully-automatic-with-no-accuracy mode. Our aetheric gauntlets already have that role (Semi-inaccurate suppression fire). That said, spending a revision on the gauntlets ought to be a good thing to do.
