I would've voted for Natalie, but I'm not too sore over it.

Is that aethercannon a kettlegun or a base line aethercannon?

How does a topaz trim crystal compare to a baseline trim web?
Topaz VS lift vs normal S lift?
Topaz VS core vs normal S core?
Topaz S core vs normal medium core?

Quote from: Burning Skiffs/Royal Viper
Marines at Three Captains obviously use prepared bait and strike.

The four skiffs at Kasgyre travel to Three Captains on a scouting/suicide mission. 1 scout, the rest coordinated fire. Find out what they have stationed there and do as much damage as possible.

Mercury and 4 skiffs travel to Kasgyre with Ophidian, then they continue on to Blackstone. 1 skiff scouting, the rest using coordinated fire. Mercury picks up the squad at Blackstone for redeployment.

Ophidian limps back to Kasgyr for repairs.
-Repair hull (1o 5w).
-Equip it with our 6 trim crystals in storage.
-Convert the 2 light cannon mounts in the front and center of the ship to a vanguard mount (3o 3w) and give it our prototype vanguard cannon (free)
-Move 2 kettleguns to the tail.
The Ophidian still needs 2 more kettleguns and its trim crystals could be upgraded, but it is a functional viper with lots of firepower due to the vanguard cannon.

Topaz shopping list:
-Medium core crystal (18c)
-Small lift crystal (3c 2o)
-Trim web (1c 1o 3w)
-Kettlegun (1c 1o)

Equip Anguis with:
-topaz medium core
-topaz small lift
-2 topaz trim webs
-2 topaz trim crystal pairs
-3 topaz kettleguns
-copper frontal armour (6o)
It is now a minimally effective Royal Viper. Next turn we should finish it with more trim webs and cannons (either topaz or normal) and a comm officer.

Also buy 1 transport hull and 1 ream of webbing (2o, 7w, 2s).
Buy 6 reams of webbing for our empty Viper (12s).
Buy 16 aethersilk vests (16s)

Costs 23 crystal, 16 ore, 18 wood, and 30 silk.
Leaves us with 0 crystal, 19 ore, 74 wood, and 14 silk.
Next turn we will have 23 crystal, 36 ore, 93 wood, and 24 silk.

If you have any problems or changes you would make to this plan let me know.

Sending our skiffs to attempt to have the transport run that blockade might be helpful, though we may also just lose the skiffs as well.

Kettle, the kettle kinda is your baseline since it's a unilateral improvement and has no change in any other feature of its design.

Equal or slightly worse acceleration, better top speed.
For the Topaz VS lift and trim, it's about 2/3rds relative power to a basic S. You can probably limp a crappy transport through with VS Topaz core and lift, if you were desperate and didn't mind having limited shroud/maneuvering/speed.
For the Topaz S core, it's about 1/2 relative power to a basic M core

If we ship raw materials (wood, ore etc) to troopers using Bait+Trap does that mean their effectiveness is increased in that tactic?

Not particularly. Raw wood might help if they had tools, but shipping someone a bunch of raw timber, metal ingots, unrefined silk, and miracle-crystal-gro formula doesn't help a lot. One might be able to design/revise a general kit or care packages of selected tools and materials, but just shipping them a log won't help much.

Would it make sense to build 1 Squad of Witch Hunter equipped marines (snipers?) to garrison Glowcove. It seems like it would be affordable and that way we can reduce the effectiveness of a surprise attack from that direction.

Tossing my full plan up there, and voting for helmacon's topaz shopping list because its the same as mine.

The vanguard mount was described as being almost impossible to use in its current state, so I'm not keen on it being put in a viper yet.

It's uncomfortable sweaty hell for the gunner, can't rotate at all, and the gunner can't see and relies on signals from a spotter. It is possible to use.
The first problem can be lessened by rotating vanguard gunner every minute or so.
The second is mitigated because we already aim the ship instead of the guns, and the front guns would usually be pointing forward anyway when in an anti-skiff spread pattern.
The third problem is a problem. Either the gunner relies on a spotter which lessens reaction times, or just keeps shooting every two seconds and hopes to hit. Just keep shooting isn't a bad idea due to the high rate of fire.

Sheer volume of fire should still make the vanguard much superior to 2 kettleguns despite the shitty mount. It shoots 1.5 times as often for the first minute or two, then 7.5 times as often afterwards. Fights between our corvettes can last 15 or 20 minutes so this is a huge improvement for most of the fight. The kettleguns rely mostly on luck and volume of fire to hit anyway so the accuracy flaws aren't that crippling. Even if it has a 1/4 fraction of the hit rate, the rate of fire will still make it advantageous.

Buying a vanguard is a wasteful idea with our current mount and prices (probable exception for a royal topaz vanguard), but it would be stupid to waste our free prototype vanguard any longer. We have to send it out at some point, can't keep waiting for things to be perfect. This goes for both the cannon and the viper, since we would have to keep Ophidian in dock an extra turn if we wanted to give it kettleguns instead of the vanguard and that would put us a turn behind in securing Three Captain's airspace and building a colony there. If we put the vanguard on it now we can send it out with the Royal Anguis and 6+ skiffs and secure TC airspace next turn.

So yes, almost impossible.  I still don't like it but I see the logic.  Presumably we'll be able to retrofit  the mint when we eventually fix it.

Aye, its just a temporary mount until we make something better.
