Question: since land units can hop a strait and all, can we trade with someone on the opposite side of such a strait?

That seems reasonable.

It appears that having provinces adjacent to the same body of water counts as a land connection for purposes of trade.

I assumed as much, but looking at the flurry of diplomatic activity with the Empire, I assume I didn't get the best deal, and there might be an opportunity for renegotiation sooner or later.

Finally! Finally the Empire has sent someone else. Your last ambassador including our entire tax AND the treasure fleet transporting it got sunk by whatever dwells on Biting. Repeated attempts to recover at least the taxes have failed and any men sent as messengers to you were also attacked and sunk. I have no idea whats going on on that island but could you ask the Imperial Court to send an expedition to help cleanse the Island? Thus we could recover the lost taxes and avenge the death of that poor ambassador.

Can I know generally how much per unit or something? Because Option 3 has the same idea but with 'less motivation' and I"m betting that means 'spending more'.
Because I will use them, as a very OOC note between us, to attack neutrals/monsters. :3

About the tracing, that's only for option 1 right?
...Does the espionage tech or MORE money help make the traces into 'not really the Alliance's fault'? :3
May I know a baseline for these ideas in terms of money?

 For option 1 it'll be the base upkeep per unit. For option 3 it'll be double their upkeep. Tracing it is the same between the two. People will only have a chance to find out if they use the espionage tech, so you'll only have to start worrying about that then. I'm going to withhold actual upkeep values for now though, as there is no way you'd know that IC.

If you were to take the military subsidy, the Empire would want to relocate those Imperials elsewhere.

Here are some more options that include an economic subsidy:

Option 4: Trade with the Empire. Alliance territory may be used as a Staging Area for Imperial Forces. For every £50 block of Alliance investment in a territory the Empire will add another £10. Moderate Imperial Garrison across all Alliance territories.

Option 5: Trade with the Empire. Alliance territory may be used as a Staging Area for Imperial Forces. For every £100 total the Alliance spends on industrial or economic buildings or territory investment the Empire will pay £10 to the Alliance treasury.

As far as the Empire is concerned, you are an Imperial Organisation. As such, you are obliged to pay taxes equal to 20% of your income, follow all Imperial laws and to follow all orders issued by an Imperial official, be they civil or military.

In practice you're a semi-autonomous state that pays lip service and tax, but the Empire will do anything it can to exert control.

The Empire will claim to have the right to park large volumes of imperial troops in your lands for no reason, and will expect you to support them in any military or diplomatic action it feels necessary.

With Trade, you will gain 10% of your income, giving a net loss of 10% of your income after tax. There are clauses in the agreement about imperial investment in Bannerstock lands as well as military protection, but neither side has broached those subjects as of yet.
