Splitting this off from the That Which Sleeps thread to give it its own attention.

Self-described as being inspired by Crusader Kings, Pandemic and That Which Sleeps, you play as an eldritch, forgotten horror that seeks to consume the world in darkness, because that's what you do.

The website can be found at https://bobbytwohands.itch.io/shadows-behind-the-throne, and they have plans to launch a kickstarter, probably sometime this week.

Update 6/7/17
So a kickstarter has been launched for this game, which you can find Here. The goal is to raise 6,000 pounds (7,744 US$ or 6,869 Euros depending on where you are in the world).

The game will eventually go paid release, which is fair enough, and kickstarter rewards are mostly of the variety of being able to occasionally see your chosen name appear as someone you can enthrall/implicate/murder, as well as being able to design extra cultures for the game.

I already tried this for a bit.  Too bad the only actors in this world are basically the lordlings.  The direct subordinates really only function as people who are there to be suspicious.

Fun tip for V10: 1st enthrallment can do a lot of converting from the start before getting found out.
2nd, charismatic bonus is not enough, you need to lay down the ground work beforehand.  4th one is conquerer's path.  Starting as a small place... With many small neighbors.

Edit: playable, but needs more... Atmosphere.

I've played around with a bit. The fishmen route is fairly simple to understand, but I've also tried starting an inland hive... but I'm not quite sure what you're supposed to do with it.

I played one game with a fishman settlement and an a vampiric settlement with sleeping population. The sleeper settlement kept performing rituals making other rulers insane. I really won with the third settlement though, that started spreading the plague which made everyone kill each other. No idea if cursing the rulers helped there.

The core of the game is fine, it just needs a lot more atmosphere and content. Plus more agents of evil/heroes than just rulers.

The core of the game is fine

Which is honestly the most important part.

You can fix up gameplay and atmosphere. You can't fix what is fundamentally broken.

Meh, I'll rather take a buggy but interesting game than a completely functioning but bland and boring game.

Probably worth noting before someone else tries it, the human species being eaten by shoggoths does not, in fact, count as covering the world in darkness. Also the last city on the map is apparently something approaching invincible. Hundreds of turns of being attacked by shoggoths will not end it, though it does keep the population down.

Haven't tried doing that and then exploding it via worm or something, though. Wonder what'll happen...

Which is why the core being so solid is so important.

I've played around with a bit. The fishmen route is fairly simple to understand, but I've also tried starting an inland hive... but I'm not quite sure what you're supposed to do with it.

You fill your cities with eggpeople and use the migration impulse to send them to other cities, and when there's enough spread around you detonate them, destroying the cities and filling the world with worm monsters.

Doesn't work very well in practice.

Kind of wish this game would take some inspiration from Arkham horror and That Which Sleeps

Where you chose a sort of "Patron" or whatever way you want to do this... And they affect how you play the game to a certain extent.

But meh "I wish this was a different game" is a dime a dozen.

Seriously. The worm swarm things are ruddy flimsy, and the nests reproduce so slowly they might as well not. Tried blowing up multiple 90+% infested cities at once, tried blowing up the most isolated city on the map, tried blowing up cities sequentially as nests began to get suppressed, tried a buncha' stuff, all for naught. Armies roll over the worms like they're barely there, most of the time, and the rest take losses but still reinforce and kill off the nests and their defenders before anything substantial can take root.

It's kinda' weird the worms can reproduce and infest a city of tens of thousands faster than they can pop out a single nest or swarm all on their own, tbh.

I enthralled a baron of a big city- built that gate building that takes 50 turns and a bunch of things came out and ate all the cities on the map.  That's... a loss, right?
