Technically, the USSR doesn't own the island, it's just a bunch of desert commies.

You misunderstand.  The Comintern didnt want to be involved in WW2 because it was "bickering between capitalists", and only got involved once Germany invaded Russia, a member of the Comintern.

This is why I bring it up.

To be gamey, we know that Cannala has joined the Allies. I would bet anything that even now, they are making overtures to the French to gain the resources of that island, and will get it in time. Meanwhile, we will not gain the resources of Mutriqa until and unless we take action to invade it, and the best time to do so is now, since we don't have a lander to push the Tundra nor do we suffer if the Cannalans somehow manage to make an advance in the Plains.

The advantage was that invasion and conquest was said to be quicker than diplo-annexation in gaining the resources of the islands. If we delay another turn, or another two, we will hand away that advantage to Cannala.

No, I agree that we should take the island.  We're in the Axis, after all.  Aggressively gobbling up smaller nearby patches of land is, like, our thing.

We should probably come up with an actual justification, though. Something about them supporting communist rebels in Forenia? We can claim (rightly or wrongly) that they are smuggling weapons supplies (obviously Forenians do not need to smuggle weapons) to the SPF in support of an armed uprising against the democratically elected government.
That'll fly, right?

That's actually quite genius. Would explain why the FSP decided to go underground.

What do we know about the island? It's a little desert with oil.  We could say they were hiding weapons of mass destruction.

Whoa, hey now. I'm cool with joining the axis, but we are still trying to be the good guys, right?

Are we the bad guys, helmacon?

I think morality has gone out the window after the thread decided to side with Axis for +1. Or +6 million, as the case may be. The only downside to his proposal is that WMDs don't quite exist yet.

I think we should claim that there are some wronglfully oppressed Forenians that need to be forcibly liberated.

To be fair, opposing the axis because of the holocaust is shameless meta-gaming at this point. Nobody really had a clue what was happening until 1941 when the british caught a few classified transmissions.

Plus, it gives us a great reason to break with the axis later on when we need it.

So, yea. Canonically, we can still be "good guys".

al-Mutriqa is a primarily desert island.  There are a few aboriginals, but Forenia has elected not to interfere with the (very few) current residents.  Pumping the sands for oil and building infastructure should have minimal affect on their natural nomadic lifestyle, assuming they stick to the reservation we give them.

I like this justification a lot more. "It's to protect thier way of life"

Less of an "invasion" and more of a "Trail of Tears" sort of thing.
