Gardening thread!
« on: February 21, 2017, 01:55:16 pm »

Welcome to the gardening thread, for all your growing needs, wants, and rants! What are you growing? How are you growing it? Why aren't you growing something better with that precious soil you impotent waste of space? are you growing it?

So far, here's what I've started up since monday, I'm excited for the flowers and subsequently the butterflies to come in.

Growing in small jiffy pots: Pumpkins "fresh" from the slaughtered pumpkin witch, and a generic pumpkin named "paul"
Growing in starters: Nasturtium "Empress of India", and Purple Cone Flower Echinaceas
Growing in a rack: Sun Flowers, more Purple Cone Flowers, Gaillard Goblins, 2 types of onions (MY SWAMP)
Growing in ceramic pots: Various seasonings and garnishes, including catnip.

I've a bunch of 20" plastic pots that I found in my ditch left over, what else should I try growing?

Hey, I've been feeling that we need a garden thread for a while. I started gardening last year and now I'm preparing for year 2.

If your 20 inch pots are pretty deep, then they should be able to handle some bigger plants. I'd recommend tomatoes, cucumbers, or potatoes.

Nice! We're in drought conditions right now where I live, so all that's really growing between that and the horrendously poor soil is spinach. I should plant some more, actually. Got a good harvest of tomatoes in before the summer really turned hot, though!

Forgot to mention that I've already gotten two cages of tomatoes growing along with the garnishes we've bought and transplanted.

You can always use more tomatoes.

Another big plant I'd suggest is eggplant, though I think the vine types get really big so you might want to get a bush eggplant. Sweet potatoes and tomatillos could also use that space well. Or you could fit multiple medium-sized plants into those pots, like 2-3 broccoli or a group of bean plants.

My garden is currently in the middle of the seed-planting stage, as it's supposed to be cold outside still. My onions that I planted around a month ago have sprouted, but nothing else yet. In a little bit I'm going to plant my tomato and eggplant seeds. I'm also planting some potato seeds, which are unusual, so I'm excited about how those are going to turn out. I also need to soak a couple sweet potatoes so they can start producing slips for me to plant.

PLANT SOME PEPPERS LIKE THAT CREATURE SOLIFUGE

Also eggplants take a lot of water, or so I heard. Sweet potatoes are supposed to be easy to take care of. I wouldn't recommend trying to cultivate anything bigger then that unless your garden space is specially large and gets water on a daily basis.

Personally, I always wanted to cultivate mushrooms, because mushrooms are delishus, but I lack the proper environment to grow them properly.

Aw yeah, bought a brand new spade and planted a forsythia. Gonna go about inspecting my garden, figuring out what is a strangling weed that needs dying, what is a plant I forgot I planted, where the hell my mint plants all went, and find out which plants are weeds that shouldn't be dedified like dandelions or clovers

The temperate nepenthes, fly-eating pitcher plant, though still dormant is now massive. Daily care has paid off well

Don't count your plants before they're grown. Coaxing life from mother earth often proves far more complex than it initially appears.

Someone has given me the idea of putting a wire mesh over the seeds, since they're normally covered by a plastic cover in the starters, I think it might work. It didn't bother the pumpkin seeds, either so I've still got that much going for me.
