Okay, ready.

Spoiler: GM note (click to show/hide)

Lootington, showing evidence as the only one to charge headlong into more things than Frank does, is undaunted by the lack of loot this time and heads west.  This jaunt is rewarded with a lovely view of a dead end.  And glowing magenta rocks in the walls?  Yes, lovely indeed.  You could shout "mine!" if you wanted, but actual mining would be more productive.

The others, trying to avoid a (presumed) ambush for the first time in history, set up a plan of defence.  Frank shows only the slightest bit of his usual headstrong nature and goes to pick off whatever is making noises at range.  He heads to the north, with Durenadal in tow, and . . .

Aw, great.  There's a little loop in the tunnel here, and whatever you heard earlier is nowhere in sight.  The mineral outlook is interesting, though.  You see patches in the shale of some gray stone--that is, a distinct gray in clusters that contrast with the normal striations.

Frank looks more closely.  It's not a sure thing, since ores are usually different from finished metals, but these gray stones might be the same "workstone" they used to make your fancy new knife.

Meanwhile, Overseer finishes a careful study of the standing jellyfish.  Since they're not buoyed by water, the tentacles aren't pure streamers of stinging cells, so some of the worthwhile meat is in those things.  The legs are too bony: they'd be good to sell as straight-out bones to any carvers.  And, for sure, the body would provide a usable hide.  Dustan, keeping look around the area, observes that people back at the Halfway House made waterskins out of that leather.

. . . No one's dead yet?  Huh.  Well, maybe later.

Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt), you originally mentioned setting up a fortified area.  You can mine out shale (the stuff naturally breaks into slabs and shingles) but you'd need Helmacon's splitter wands to mine anything quickly.

"MINE!" Pick the shiniest thing there is and start mining.

"We should get a lot of this grey stuff. I think it's something called "Workstone". It's what my knife is made out of, so it must be pretty decent.

Before that, I'd like to check out the North just a little bit. Would any of you care to peek through that hole in the Western wall?
"

Frank, now quite a bit more emboldened, heads up North at a light jog.

Helmacon ties one of his leather strips back on itself to make a makeshift sling. (it should only take a moment) He loads a rock, and begins advancing slowly to the north. "John, Dustin, back me up here"

After we deal with this, we ought to mine all the workstone and glowstone we can.

I'm wrapping this up right before sleep, so if you spot any errors just let me know and I'll correct it in the morning.

Spoiler: Crafting (click to show/hide)

Helmacon makes a quick effort at crafting a sling.  Saving you a few precious opal, I tell you.  With that accomplished, a couple exiles spread out between interesting mining spots while a small group of armed individuals explores north.  You think you hear a commotion ahead!

But no, there's nothing here.  This keeps happening.  Instead, you find various geological/geographic features: there's another opening in the ceiling here with fresh air, sort of a bullseye around a tall-ish stalagmite; off in the northeast is another tunnel that vanishes into the unseeable distance; and there are deposits all around, including hematite, coal, and two batches of opal on opposing sides.  This area seems to have been geologically busy.

We appear to have interest in mining the slow way.  Remember: if you want to do this, we'll need a consensus, because interruptions from other people get annoying.  (Let alone interruptions from the GM . . . )

And I should mention that Dustan sold his mining pick and cannot join.  However, Helmacon had some sort of interest in a butchered standing jellyfish: if you wanted to get on that, you could loan your mining pick to Dustan.  Or you could loan your knife to him and ask him to get to work on it while you mined.  Options.

eh, I'll loan my pick to dustin, if he wants it. I do owe him for patching me up earlier, and what better way to repay that then letting him partake in backbreaking labor?

Anyways, yea. I do my best to butcher one of the jellyfish while taking the utmost care to preserve the tentacles.
bout to get all macgyver over here.

Frank returns to the workstone, albeit a bit warily, and begins to mine.

We should set up camp in the far bottom. That narrow passageway might cut off any escape, but it would also be very easy to protect.

You'll have a whole day to work on the task.  Just lemme know what you want to have happen.

Obviously, after a couple days, anything involving untreated animal bits will rot on you.

collect the already mined coal at least enough for tonight fire then mine glowstone.

As of now, you don't have enough coal to make enough fire to cook everyone's food.  You could mine the stuff you see in the northwest.  However, Dustan's glowstone has served for one night already, so I presumed I'd continue with that.

And unless anyone says otherwise, I'll assume you butcher more than just the one standing jellyfish for Helmacon; I'll butcher however many of them it takes to feed the whole group overnight.

I already know what Durenadal (HugeNerdAndProudOfIt) and Sir Lootington are mining.  Overseer (FallacyofUrist), speak up if you have input.  Dustan, if you want to mine something with the loaner pick, go for it.

"A blanket octopus? No, but I think I know what you have in mind."

Overseer helps with the butchering.
