It depends how you look at it. It may not bother hardcore Republicans, but moderates and undecideds perhaps don’t want to have a convicted criminal as the leader of their country come election time.

Cynically I'm going to say that if they didn't care up until now, why should they care when it's got the official stamp of law on it which the talking heads are immediately going to say is just a political smoke screen?

Critical thinking, reasoning and morality haven't done so well in the American electorate of late.

In other news, it looks like Janet Protasiewicz has won the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, instead of the Trump backed anti-LGBTQ, anti-woman, anti-democracy candidate.

Important as this means there is now a 4-3 liberal lean on the body, so hopefully they throw out the gerrymandered to fuck maps the GOP-controlled state senate want, and there likely won’t be any 2020 election related shenanigans afoot.

Important to note that the Wisconsin State Senate District 8 Special Election seems to be going Republican, giving the Republicans super-majority in the Wisconsin Senate and enough votes for impeachment.

From what I read there were many who were trying to differentiate, distinguish themselves, and even criticize the Trump, however, now they all voicing their support for Trump (anything else will be political suicide), this along publicity this gets him could easily net Trump the GOP nomination.

Otherwise note that that recent poll suggest that 90% of Republicans, 70% of independents and even 30% of Democrats believe that the decision to indict Trump was political. Overall that's 62% of American people..  And the indictment plays wonderfully into his successful populist narrative of coastal elites, together it could net him votes from the independents too..

I hope that who ever made the decision to indict wasn't some self righteous idiot but had careful consider the implication, because from the side it seem like a huge gamble on a double edged sword.

That's one poll, and remember how many polls last year were insistent that the GOP would have a dominant Red Wave in the midterms instead of a historic defeat. Most others are showing significantly lower opinions that politics played a consideration - and note that those polls frame it as "do you believe politics played a part in the timing", not "is it politically motivated". There's also plenty of polls showing supermajority approval from the US populace as a whole.

Trump was already a favorite to win the nomination, because the bulk of primary voters are the same hardcore minority that he heavily caters to. That doesn't translate to "most Americans are against the indictment", and it very well may hurt him in the general.

"politics played a part in the timing" could also be interpreted as "they delayed it due to the political situation". Which is definitely true, because we know he'd have been indicted *whilst sitting as President* if they could have reasonable done so following the Michael Cohen trial where DT was directly named as ordering the criminal acts (a trial led by a Trump Government appointed Judge no less).

I wonder if the discovery of even more payments to Cohen whilst and after he was President was the straw that broke the camels back here...

Also explains why Cohen kept flipping on his publicly expressed opinions of Trump, which I remember everyone thinking was weird at the time.

It's honestly an incredible relief and the premise of ungerrymandered district maps makes me hopeful for the state's future, as does the assurance that we won't make regressive decisions about women's futures for now. We might actually catch up with Minnesota and Michigan, y'know?

You all know that for better or worst, this will likely result in Trump being elected again right? People seem to mever get enough of electing charged criminals. Add up some sex scandal and probably there will be statues of him.

It was a new DA that decided to pursue it. The last few passed.
It's why the misdemeanor timed out.

He scraped out a narrow win nearly seven years ago, and every election since has rebuked him. He's very likely to win the GOP primary next year, but the general election is a far more difficult target.

I'm reasonably sure that the smarter Republicans know that Biden's gonna be tough to beat, but his successor is gonna be weaker. So they're more than happy to let Trumpy take another L.

The more moderate wing would dearly love to take control, but Trumpism has a strong enough pull on the more extreme members of the base that skewing away from it is disaster in the primaries - remember that primaries have a much smaller draw than the general election does.

I'm less concerned by whether he'll win the actual election, and more about what kinda bullshit is going to be pulled to try and win without needing to bother with an election.
