Then there were the Homeland Security tests carried out a few years ago, where about 80% of the weapons, explosives and contraband made it all the way through security.

I believe the head of TSA stepped down after that fiasco was published.

But is 20% better than having security systems that don't take ages to get through and don't provide the NSA with more of your information that they shouldn't have?

I'm torn on the strategic level - the larger the backstab ball, the more divided the No Socialist Grandpa vote is. On the other hand, fewer candidates makes the media blackout more explicit and gives Bernie more time free of it. Harris voters mostly left her already and I suspect the truly hardcore will just denounce the election, so it doesn't directly boost anyone.

Truth be told I stopped paying a lot of attention to Harris, save a couple weeks last spring her campaign went nowhere for the same reason Warren is floundering now - playing to the left while being openly a candidate of the right. Harris was the worst outcome of the candidates save Biden depending on how severe his senility really is, but the nightmare really just didn't take off with her.

More importantly, is 20% better than not making a massive crowd outside of the "secured" area? The security line at any major airport is a far more lucrative target than any airliner.

Well then we just need a checkpoint before the screening checkpoint.

Then a checkpoint before that.

And one before that.

Until there's a TSA official in your bedroom watching you get dressed. They already see the naked digital you, why naff around?

Does make you wonder though why we haven't yet experienced one of those airport attacks that's so much more common in the rest of the world.

Looking at Wikipedia, airport attacks don't seem to be common anywhere, and the US has a fair share of them. In the US, we're really paranoid about attacks on air travel because of 9/11, because most people don't understand that 9/11 was an "only works once" operation. The hijackers were able to take over the planes primarily because "do not resist hijackers" was common policy at the time, due to most previous hijackings being "force the plane to land somewhere else while making demands, eventually everyone gets to go home as long as nobody resists" affairs.

I was more meaning terror attacks aimed at crowds of people. Seems you always hear about bombs being detonated at markets and such overseas. Most of what I remember here in the US are vehicle attacks (which seem more like people being deranged than actual terrorism) and the Boston Marathon bombing.

There have definitely been vehicle-based terrorism attacks. I think the big disconnect is that sheer distance insulates the Americas from most of the prominent international terrorist organizations, so mostly what we get is domestic - and US domestic terrorists (both white supremacists or people radicalized by foreign groups) tend to use guns even when a bomb or gasoline can would be much more effective, partially because of media blanketing.

The problem appears to be that the Democrats are so far right as an organization that voters who want actual progress are left out. The conservatives around here (Texas) are already rightly celebrating Trump's second term.

I’m guessing the Cold War may have had something to do with the parties becoming further right, anything further left than the policies at the time was considered a gateway to communism.
