The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
Don't worry, mitochondrial Eve will soon lead the mitochondria to rebel against us parasites.  This rebellion will take the form of goo-powers, flamethrowing, and straight up magic.  (This is somehow the plot to Parasite Eve, an actual RPG)

I'm quite aware, I watched Best Friends play it.  It basically takes the idea of mitochondria having separate DNA from the cell it lives in and just runs really far with it.

Can't really blame the "complete lack of critical thinking" on the totalitarian government, since India has the same deal. Education is massively pushed by parents and is of course exceptionally important for finding a high-paying job, but the system itself is pure memorization, to the point where asking the same questions out of order will result in a complete blank.

Also, corporal punishment for answering a question incorrectly. Corporal punishment for everything, really. But the kids are used to that from home anyways, so it doesn't really matter...

How does that society function?

No idea. A lot of honking is involved though, I can tell you that much.

Also I think they've still got the highest rates of general population voting outside of blatantly crooked dictatorships.

But then there are the stories in newspapers about people like the 16-year-old girl who killed herself because her dad grounded her and cut off her TV allowances for a few days... India is a big place though, so it's kinda hard to lump it all together.

But hey, while American middle and high schools may be completely awful, at least the universities are holding up a high standard of educational quality.

EDIT: In Americaland news, Julie says more things. Tune in next week for more things that get said!

You realize that the leading theory about mitochondria having separate DNA, is that they were actually separate organisms that were absorbed into other ones, leading to a strange sort of microscopic symbiotic relationship that's just managed to stay around for the past couple billion years?

Makes you wonder if something like this is actually possible, where mitochondria start to breed & evolve again, and eventually become cell-devouring parasites that eat us from the inside out.

Well, no, it doesn't; they can no longer replicate without their host organisms and the selective pressures that drove the migration of those genes into nuclear DNA are still present.

I understand, I said it half-jokingly anyway.

There's some game announced (by an indie) called "active shooter" where you can play a rampage shooter while others play civilians and cops (mutliplayer). Naturally, people want the game banned, not the guns. Because games are insensitive.

BTW the people against it clearly don't understand how Steam works, saying that Valve are "making" this game.

I mean...  that loosely would describe Half Life 2 (SP+MP (especially if you count Garry's Mod roleplay servers)), not to mention some hypothetical sequel.

But yes, priorities are pretty weird here.  Jokes aside, it has been disgusting watching certain gun advocates trying to rekindle anti-videogame sentiment.
It's clearly the movies to blame! /s

The funny thing is that the murder rate dips whenever violent movies are in the cinema (some researchers checked decades-worth of ticket sales vs the amount of violence in the movies each weekend), probably because when people are at the movies on a weekend that cuts into drinking time. The dip lasts overnight until the next morning. Similar to effects with porn availability (negatively correlated with sexual assaults). Same thing again with releases of violent games (youth violence is depressed for weeks after the release of a big game, because kids are indoors playing the games and not bored, going out causing trouble).

e.g. there's a push-back to eliminate media that portrays stuff that many young males find appealing - sex, violence, etc. But stamping out the media has the same effects as prohibition. e.g. if porn was stamped out then the only way young horny men see a naked girl is to go out and actually grab one. Some people say getting rid of porn would be good because it would force people into "real interactions", which are more "real" and "fulfilling". But hey "real interactions" doesn't necessarily mean consensual or informed. While we call porn "poor sex ed" ... since when did sex ed class even teach sex technique? Porn isn't perfect education about how sex is actually happens, but it's actually better than the alternative currently offered by society, which is effectively no advice whatsoever. e.g. sex wasn't magically better or more fulfilling back in the days we didn't have this stuff. Get rid of porn and the most likely result is a return to the "blind fumbling ignorance" approach to sex, along with more young guys just taking what they want.

Similarly, you stamp out violent movies and games then some of the audience for those will shift to non-violent movies and games, but not all. Some of them will also decide that going out drinking is more fun than sitting down and watching the "allowed" re-runs of Bridget Jones Diary, leading to more drunk violence.

Yeah, I saw an article on The Hill talking about it which mentioned Valve as one of the creators and I was like ”What? Why would Valve be the creator of it?" It wasn’t an against-it article, just talking about it, so, yeah, whoever wrote that article or wrote the one The Hill sourced from clearly doesn’t understand how Steam works.

The "BAN IT!!" behavior from people is typical of the crowd that refuse to accept the concept of "Games as Art", where Art is often an artifact of the times and era in which it occurs-- and games are no exception.

I am not at all surprised to see a game with this as the focus.

What needs to change is the outdated notion that games are not art.
