We've all heard that freedom of speech doesn't protect you from negative repercussions, only from the government. More specifically, it only protects you from the United States government. It's a new loophole for a new world, the jackbooted bastards who'll grind our faces into the ground won't even be wearing the flag when they do it.

Unfortunately I doubt there will be any response. One of the infamous qualities of the UN in NYC is that the huge number of people with immunity are riddled with folks who conscientiously break traffic laws and steal shit because they can't be detained. There's no real force outside occasional outrage that would convince politicians to do anything about this.

Yeah as it is now any diplomatic security baffoon can technically go snort some coke, rape a dozen minors, and the worst that can happen to him is that he's declared persona non grata and offered a first class ticket home. Now that probably won't happen, because most foreign countries at least have some decency standards and he'd face justice back at home, but still.

There's nothing the US can do. Legally embassy personnel can do whatever they want. Example: In 1984, Libyan personnel from their embassy in Britain open fired on protestors there, killing a British Constable.

Well, legally the US could force the individuals out of the country and in an extreme action close their embassy. That's basically the only repercussion to anything a diplomat does though, we can just make them go home.

It's interesting what parallels there are with that case (the language from the guest nation about a 'threat', at odds with currently known facts), but the sticking point was that that act was (precipitated) on foreign sovereign territory, something that prompted a change in law afterwards.


(At the risk of reigniting an old (yet probably still current) issue, interesting to see that the US cops were not the ones being seen as heavy-handed, this time round. Not that I don't understand why the difference, just a fleeting thought on my part.)

I'd assume getting shot to death(in Garfield's case, poor medical treatment was more of a factor) is a worse treatment than your every single action being scrutinized and criticized.

Diplomatic immunity only goes so far and yeah they really can be charged. The difference is that they don't stand trial in the country they are in, but rather their home country.
