Streamers and Let's Players, who's your faves?
« on: December 14, 2016, 03:12:34 pm »

As the title says, who does everyone watch or at least listen to? I rewatch Let's Drown Out with Yahtzee and Gabe, and recently have been working my way through KeepetClassy, which is Gabe's other channel where he plays stuff with his friend Aaron. I also keep up with and rewatch some of Retsupurae's stuff. I liked and went though Mr.DJB and his friend play through Undertale.

I've been thinking about making my own Let's Drown Out style LPs, but with a certain..... DwarfBro flavor instead of Yahtzee's Brit stuffiness to contrast against Gabe's relaxed Aussie attitude.

Ah yes, the insatiable lust of corn and rice, clearly two of the most erotic foods.

For vidja gaem people, I mostly like supergreatfriend (best voice ever, SA person), tietuesday, slowbeef-diabeetus/retsupurae, smiteSA and psychidelic eyeball (SA letsplayers).

For non vidja gaem people, I like hickok45 (sassy old man with guns), forgotten weapons (super gun nerd auction person), AvE (canadian engineer guy that talks funny), and some other things I don't actualy remember atm.

Robbaz. Pretty much the only one I watch with any regularity. I watch him to laugh. When I want to actually know something I read articles instead. I like TB and he's insightful, but I don't have 45 minutes for him to get to the fucking point. And that's generally how I feel about most youtubers talking about vidya games.

I like Lazy Game Reviews, although his let's-plays are very much side content (as the title implies).

He's generally very articulate about how and why older games are different to newer ones, and he loves big boxes and thick manuals like I do. OTOH, sometimes he's obnoxiously superior about which games are "real" games and thus okay to enjoy, and which games are for mindless babies. The nostalgia goggles are nowhere near as thick as Game Overthinker's, though.

I follow four people.

Jef Major who is hilarious and does some Dwarf Fortress streams sometimes. His YouTube channel hasn't been updated in a bit but is full of lots of gems.

Our own Sappho has a channel which I enjoy. She has a very relaxing voice.

I recently started watching Lady Lilia. She's a lot of fun and tends to do voices for various characters, which can be hilarious.

And I watch BeagleRush, mostly for his XCOM stuff. I'm much better at the game since I started watching his old XCOM EU stuff back when it was new.

Hum, there's a bunch, tho I kinda don't follow them all at the same time, usually watch a few at a time before getting bored and watching some others for a while, and so on.

The Hearthstone usuals are Trump, Kripp, Savjz and Toast, I find the insights, the salt and the magic moments are much more enjoyable than playing the game itself, which is usually infuriating. Then there's some misc ones like Quill18, Marbozir and Aavak for the grand strategy and random indie games, they're good for finding new stuff to play or getting an impression of some games I might be interested in. TB is there for WTF's and his Shoutcraft stuff (tho I guess that isn't him playing it per se), usually an entertaining watch and sometimes I learn I might like a game I didn't think much of previously. Scott Manley is a chill dude for space games, always fun to watch and listen to him, regardless of the game played. Extra Play has a number of folks playing various games, usually with some decent analysis on top of it when they bring in specific game folks (plus the buggers got me into DS, never gonna forgive them that), more educational plays when I'm feeling like it. Jim Sterling for the utter and complete shit he's willing to dredge out of Steam Greenlight (plus he's a funny bloke), for the feeling of fascinated horror that some people are actually asking money for some of the stuff on offer. The Fragnostic is good for random old or horror games, but even if you don't like those that much, his rambling brit commentary is pure gold to just listen to, even without the games. Used to watch Yahtzee, but he doesn't really upload much stuff since he left Australia. There's also Life of Boris I guess but he isn't too regular with his game stuff, tho I guess that doesn't matter since he's pretty good regardless of the type of content he does.

Wow, looking at it now, that's a pretty big list there, but as I said, a fraction of it is watched regularly at any given time, usually depending on the mood.

T90

TheViper's started streaming a lot more since he got back from China as well. I've actually mostly been watching T90 and Viper over the last little while.

Also watch Firebat quite a bit. He's mostly fairly laid-back and is an absolute terror at Hearthstone when he wants to be.

Every now and then I watch some Scott Jund (DamnNoHTML) or Praise the Sun for Dark Souls or miscellaneous PvP. Depends on my mood, though.

Joel of Vinesauce, and Broteam are hilarious. I used to watch Jefmajor, but I feel as though there was a bit of a quality drop around the time he became a Youtube partner. When he finally switched fully over to streaming, it was the final nail in the coffin.

Yeah, I've gotten on Viper lately.

Also obviously all the ShackTac crew should have been on the list.

Let's Players/Streamers:
LobosJr does Soulborne games. His stuff is really great.
Yrimir is amazing, but he didn't upload stuff for a year.

Reviewers:
Linkara is simply amazing. I don't read comics, but his reviews are so awesome and witty. Maybe his newer stuff is meh, but his old stuff is worth watching. If someone is interested, I can give my list of must-watch Linkara episodes.
TotalBiscuit, The Cynical Brit is a great reviewer, but I haven't watched him for a year.
I Hate Everything does "I HATE" (rants on various things) and "The Search For The Worst" (Quest for the worst film of all time). He'll probably make your ass itchy, but he's actually very level-headed and calm, and he has great arguments.

There seems to be a pattern with VERY popular letsplayers and not only handsome most of the time (Because looks matter apparently... No really... Like I even noticed that as a letsplayer becomes LESS handsome they get less viewers) but also with being as obnoxious as humanly possible.

However right now I only have one Letsplayer that I specifically go out of my way to watch... There would be others but I typically don't notice them in time... OR they only made very few videos (Dang it Culise! wait... were you Culise? dang it I cannot remember... The awesome French Reviewer who did both the Mars game and that... teens being mutated game where you kill them with flashlights game)

Chipcheezum and Ironicus Duo are the ones I currently like...

They combine an informative letsplay, with enjoying the game, NOT WASTING FREEKEN TIME!!!, and being snarky about it when they need to.

http://chipandironicus.com/

---

Though the reason I focus so much on Letsplayers I don't like is because... I am not exactly a tough letsplay critic when it comes to letsplaying... It is far more that the badness of a letsplay will suck me out then it is that the good qualities will suck me in... As well me Letsplay pet peeves KILL it for me.

The biggest pet peave that kills letsplays for me?

-Wasting Time: Holy goodness do I hate it when letsplays waste time... "I know! Lets spend 30 minutes seeing the physics of this beach ball which has nothing to do with this game!". Sure there are little diversions sometimes but still...
--I should state that "Wasting Time" isn't "doing anything that isn't directly playing the game"... If a letsplayer stops to show a piece of art that you normally wouldn't see, that is fine. If he goes to a bar... goes on stage... then the letsplayer starts singing for 10 minutes pretending he is doing Karaoke in real life... AHH!

Yet what perplexes me more... is I've had people swear to me that they ONLY like letsplays that waste time... They HATE letsplayers who don't waste time because they HATE it when letsplayers actually play the game... and in fact use the letsplays more as a way to listen to the letsplayer and watch hilarious videos then to actually watch letsplayers.

I also have no tolerance for Obnoxious letsplayers.
