In one or other of those "what <foo> are you like", the US State I'm supposed to be best suited for is Washington. Though it only covered politics, I decided I liked the typical weather there, as well.

Add Washington and Oregon (also Nevada, because why not add the deserts of Vegas to parched California?) and I could see a general Western Seaboard nation...

Somebody mentioned that most of California's farmland would not enjoy leaving the Union.  Washington and Oregon are even worse.  Pretty much the only parts that are heavily liberal are Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland.  Those three cities contain more than half the population in their respective states so the states go left fairly regularly, but it isn't as widespread as in California.

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.

The only thing up north is reservoirs, casinos, broken dreams, and snow. Even Niagra Falls is mostly in Canada. Canada could straight up occupy half the state and I'm not sure we'd bother to get the military involved.

That's that "Cascadia" thingamabob I see every so often, I think. Meh. I guess it's better off than most wannabe state-nations, since it has some sort of cohesiveness about it, but it's just... boring. I guess that's why it's together.

Not many places could be independent successfully. Ironically, NYC could manage as a Singapore-lite by importing food and establishing a fee to cross the border (the money from commuters alone would be glorious), but about a quarter of our stuff comes from being the Financial Capital of the country, and you can't be the Financial Capital of the country when you aren't in the country. I could conceive of redesigning the economy to reduce dependency on the rest of the country and take advantage of what would essentially become poor American migrant workers and put them to work along those lines, but why bother? Too expensive, and the protection of the US military is very nice.

Just to stop this nonsense comparing this incredibly ridiculous situation to the American Revolution, America certainly had no real right to secede from England. A bunch of greedy businessmen got together and said fuck taxes, we wanna be powerful. America was a fuckin' lit place to live in those times compared to being stuck in the bullshit English (and Welsh) tenant farming system. Of course, you got massacred by Natives every now and again, but that's neither here nor there.

There was also the whole bit of the British thinking that taking away powder stores and lifting muskets from us colonists was a good idea.  The taxes were an annoyance which raised animosity between the parties.  Then you decided we no longer got to decide for ourselves who would be our local governance.  Then we complained, so you decided to take our guns and horses, and told us that we couldn't freely travel between cities without special permission.  Then we said "fuck this shit, we're out."

No, states cannot leave the union, and have not ever had the ability to do so.  California was only a republic of its own for a short period while waiting for statehood, and Texas' 'Lone Star Republic' barely even existed, as the first act it performed was begging the union for admission so Santa Anna wouldn't grind them into dust.  and while the question of their succession was raised recently it was purely academic, as attempting to enact it would have gotten them invaded by the US and crushed.

... you know Texas was it's own country for 9 years right? You know Texas actualy defeated Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto and forced him to sign the Treaties of Velasco, and sent him back to mexico. The main reasons Texas wanted to join the union were economic. Texas had huge debt from just about everywhere, and one of the terms of annexation was the federal government assuming that debt.
